Don't knock them - without covers, we wouldn't have Hendrix "Hey Joe", "All along the Watchtower", Santana's "Black Magic Woman" and "She's not there". But Admittedly the latest prolifference of "Dance" covers (logical song, heaven, moonlight shadow, boys of summer) are pretty appalling

There's more to this debate than just the general suckiness of the song - you have to take into account how many thousands- even millions of people the song offended. And by people I mean of course, musicians!

The Achky breaky thing was: 1. corny 2. a musical travesty (3 chords, no changes, no middle 8) 3. over marketted, 4. poorly arranged and 5. suffered from apalling rhyme, diction and intonation (sorry Billy Ray but i'm not sure how anyone could understand a simple request for a cheese bun, let alone your soaring lamenting ballad)

It should also be pointed out that the song contains self-harm references, particularly the part where he expresses a desire for the lovely lady in question to instruct her canine to bite his leg. This actually had promise as an idea - but alas the mongrel in question didnt do a thorough enough job to stop the unbearable screaming - sorry .... i mean third chorus.

Lots of the other songs mentioned were indeed bad but did not flunk on all these criteria - even though it was a close fought thing, I'm sorry Maria, Britney, Los Lobos and company - you cannot scale the dizzying heights of unbearable horribleness that is the Billy Ray Cyrus hit Achy Breaky Heart.

First of all, I'm not sure, but I don't think that Achy Breaky Heart was written in the last 10 years. Close, but not quite. Other that, Chumbawamba takes the cake for that one annoying "I get knocked down, but I get up again" song that was popular back in '97 or so.

Worst song has to be Achy Breaky followed by Spice Girls/Hanson. Don't forget thought that it is the songwriter writing not very good songs that ruins the reputation of artists. A good song can help make a good artist generally.
