I've been interested in purchasing and learning the drums, but I of course don't know too much about them yet. I've noticed that a number of different drum sets are for sale, with the number of "pieces" ranging from 5 to 9 or so. What is the real benefit of having more drum pieces in your set? What seems to be the standard number?

My husband has a 5 piece set by Pearl. He got it used (barely)
at a local shop for 1/2 of the original retail price.

he says the size of your set depends on what kind of music you are playing, but a 5 piece set is good for a beginner.

He can't really advise you on lessons, he is self-taught.

if you would like to know more from him, just email me

5 piece is enough to start to learn. you begin by feeling comfortable around the kit and have a good handle on getting around before adding more pieces.

4 piece is all you need - bass drum, rack tom, floor tom and snare.
