View Full Version : Windows Media Player...grrrrrrrrr !
Will somebody PLEASE explain this to me.......one of my friends emails me a funny little video...i click on it to play...Windows Media Player launches and i get this message
'Sending request for codec'
Of course this 'codec' never arrives and the video doesn't play or else plays without pictures. This isn't the case with all videos, just a few but it's extremely irritating. Can anyone solve this ?...is there something i have to download to put me out of my misery ?
I'd be very grateful for any assistance :shifty:
Ok i've done some research and got it sorted. :)

I just have a problem with the dam thing "not responding" and freezing. I often have to open Task Manager to end the programme even though it won't start! Typical!

Beyond the obvious ( "Microsoft Media Player" ), it could be a firewall issue preventing the program from connecting to the codecs' download location (Microsoft firewall or 3rd party F/W program). Easiest way to tell is to temporarily disable your firewall, try the file and see if the codec manages to download correctly.
Other than that, dump Media Player and go with:
WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com/player)
Windows Media Lite (http://finalbuilds.edskes.net/wmlite.htm)
or
VideoLAN (http://finalbuilds.edskes.net/videolan.htm).
