Used to be I could "right click/save as" on anyone's avatar (animated gif's) then break it down and alter the beast at will. Now when I do this a bmp extension is automatically assigned to the pic - which doesn't allow me to do what I want. In fact, EVERY picture I attempt to download (right click/save as) from THIS board is saved as a bmp..... no choice. It might be since the new server, but I can't pinpoint it as that. Any ideas???

Thanks,
Jeanie

Right click on the image, select properties. Copy/paste the location of the file on the server to the browser window and save it from there. Don't know why they're saving as bmp. They are gif's.

If you have Paint Shop Pro you can change the bmp to a gif or a jpg or anything you like

I clicked on your avatar and selected "save target as" and i was offered the option of saving it as a gif...should be the same for you...if not then that's my list of suggestions knackered !

I only get the option .bmp..... and the pic comes up as 'untitled' to boot! I know of at least one other member having similar issues....

Go into View -> Source, and there you will see the HTML source for this page. In this HTML you search for text that is near the avatar in the page. Here you will find something like:
"avatar.php?userid=9070&dateline=1039728631" which is the direct link to an avatar. Get a download manager, and tell him to download the link you found, but make sure to put the site root in front of it.
In the case of the above example, you would feed your download manager the URL:
"http://board.midibuddy.net/avatar.php?userid=9070&dateline=1039728631" without the quotes.

The download manager will probably give an inappropriate name to the file, but if you rename it to .gif, you can open it in e.g. IE, and there you have your animated GIF.

Seems like a lot of work, but at least you have your GIF.

Well putting it into a download manager would just make it the hard way to tackle the problem.

When you right-click and press save as.... in the field where it says the filename for example "turnipidiot", even though below it in the save as type it has a .bmp extension, you can change it to a .gif by typing "turnipidiot.gif" into the filename field. This will ignore the .bmp extension and save it as a .gif file.

I don't know if you tried this or not but it should work. With this technique you can change any file into anther format and have it work properly it they are compatible file types.

I have no other choice than bitmap though. Doesn't give me the choice of saving as a gif. Very strange.

You could force it to be saved as GIF by typing the filename + .GIF and then press save. Ie. Don't use the "file type selector" in the dialogue.
BUT, I noticed that the file IS actually saved as a BMP! So, the above won't work very good. You must load the saved BMP picture into some gfx program or converter and convert it to GIF or JPG.
