Tune your low E string down a tone ... to a D ... you end up with
D-A-D-G-B-E

You can also tune D A D F# A D which is also called dropped d tuning or open d tuning

Instead of tuning to the 5th fret (for E) tune your guitar to the 7th fret. Note this is ony for Drop D (meaning only drop the Low E string!)
Hope that is what you were looking for

I think its pretty common these days that
most tuners come with a drop d setting(makes it simple).
be careful, after a few turns the string will start to get a little loose when you detune it

pluck the thickest and the third thickest (for want of a better word) until they 'ring' together, you got dropped d.
seamyd m8, we got a lot of gigging musicians here from northern ireland, chances are we play the same circuit, drop me an email for a bit of crack, we may get a pint together some night, that goes for anyone else from N.I.

go for a heavier gauge bottom e string, especially if you're using 9-42's

dropped D while playing 6 using the thumb
ever notice how it goes out of tune when you play with your thumb (john mayer)... coz its tuned w so much slack.
