Was wondering how many prefer reading sheet music to play guitar versus using TAB.

I've learned to do both and still prefer sheet music.

Tab is so much simpler and easier to read and play along with so I chose Tab

If you have heard the song that you are trying to play, Tab is better....but if you aren't familar with the song, then you would need sheet music (for various reasons). But yeah, I like Tab better also.

I like tab for checking if the notes are the ones I'm playing ,but I like notation for the rythmic timing values . In the computer age I like a program called 'Harping' as it has the values and duration of the note on a piano roll I think it's called , so not only do you see what note/chord it is, but the timing is also there. It's shareware check it out. I've tried to buy it but the programmer never does sell . Strange but true.

well- i find sheet music better if you don't know the music- if you know the music and how it goes then i would go with tabs because it's a little easier to read but sheet music gives you timing...

Tab is easier in a way than sheet music, but i think its easier to see the notes and rhythms on the sheet music, and if you are playing by tab you are following someone else's interpretation of the music. The guitar, unlike piano has many alternative fingering choices.People might find easier fingerings if they worked out the notes for themselves and used their own fingerings

.. and since it can be played with different sets of fingering on the guitar, I think a lot of the TAB I find on the internet is off note. Sheet music always seems to be very accurate.

Just as a point of interest, I read somewhere on a guitar site recently that a good way to segue from tab to notation was to write the notes for each individual string rather than the fret number (ie instead of --5-- on the top string, write it as --A--) - starts making you think of what notes you are playing. I have started teaching one of my students this technique (she's just a beginner so has no real tab or notation experience) so am keen to see how effective this is.

Tab has always been better for Guitar, but you also need to read notes.

I know how to read notes, but I still prefer tabs... so much easier, and to be quite honset, if you know a song and you really love it, you learn to remember it. so it doesn't really matter what you choose ....
