Hi
Sonar is a very powerful digital editing software that can edit midi and audio files.
It is the latest version of Cakewalk, so if you've used Cakewalk before you will find it very similar.
The manual is very good too.

I use Sonar - It's got the right combo of power, flexibility and ease-of-use. It's my application of choice.

Cubase Sx and Sonar Xl are both very good when it comes to midi editing.Rest depends upon ones personal preference. But they are very capable softwares.

I think Sound Forge is an audio editor for editing wav files etc. I don't think it does midi.
