I prefer guitar because I cant play piano LOL, seriously but, I know 3 or 4 chords on the keyboard and transpose them. I don't like the bass or drums on a keyboard, they're too mechanical or something, (I'll contradict myself by saying that I use an sr 16 for studio work)

I started to learn the piano when I was 14 and my brother learned the gitaur. It has taken me several years to be able to play music properly but my brother took off straight away. He has explained how to play the instrument and I can work out the chords on it but can only play 3 - what he taught me. I think the piano is harder to pick up but you can go further, plus it is a great solo and accompaniment. The gituar is great for accompaning songs but takes great skill to play actual music (eg classical music) or lead gitaur. I think if you want to learn an instrument but don't have much patience you should start with the gitaur. But I personally love the piano. You can play nearly anything from classical music, jazz, to modern pop songs.

I enjoy the different ways the guitar can be played, leading to an incredibly diverse range of styles, but i think you get a much better grasp of harmony by studying piano/players

ive played piano for 5 years and guitar for 3, i like guitar better, because i can actually play songs i hear on the radio and songs that i listen to in spare time. and you can play so many styles with so many songs, with piano youre a bit more limited.

But what i like about the guitar is that i can bring my guitar on the beach with me.

I play the Guitar and it's really fun but I'd like to learn how to play the Piano. The piano looks like it would be fun to learn how to play.

i've played piano for about 5 years... picked up a piano about 4 months ago. guitar is a lot more fun to play. if you already know how to play piano, picking up guitar should be easier.

Piano, because I suck at guitar (can't strum right). :p Also, it's easier for me to pick up sheet music than tabs.

i will go for the guitar
I think the piano sounds nicer, that's why I chose it. Guitar can sound really sexy in the right hands though. My brother is one of those people, well to me anyways.

I also play both, but started guitar first. I have to say I play classical guitar but mess about with electric and bass. I started playing guitar a while ago but have spent ages getting nowhere (i tend to practice guitar instead of piano!) I find really that it's hard to adapt to one from the other, we're not compatible!

if you are a music freak..take both...taking a piano will enhance your bsic skills like how to transpose or compose songs better...when you think you have had enough practie wif the piano..go for the guitar,..but if you dun have enuff money for both..go take theory lessons for piano and practical for guitar

i've been playing piano for 5 years and it sounds heaps better than a guitar. It's much harder to pick up but after a few years, u can do a whole lot more with it.
Although, if u can sing, a guitar is really cool for accompaniment. I can't sing, but.
Problem with the piano is, it costs too much to get music for it. I'm finding that i have to get mine from the US coz they've got a wider selection and sometimes its even cheaper but u have to pay shipping and handling
Any tips on where u can get sheet music in Australia?
thanx, PIANO ROCKS

Both! And any other instrument I can get my hands on. I began on Piano and then picked up guitar on my own. Piano is the easiest of the two. I'm not certain which I prefer I can't really decide.
I find the guitar to have a much steeper learning curve that the piano/keyboard. It is quicker to learn chords to a tune on the guitar. But when you control the piano/keyboard, you can sound like a whole band all by yourself.
My two sons started out on each of the instruments, and the guitarplayer was much faster able to sound "professionally". Though now, after 5 years - the piano player also sounds remarkably good.
My other experience is that if you start out on the piano, it is easier to swap to any instrument later (saxophone, trumpet, flute, bass etc.), than with a guitar only background.

True but on the other hand, you've got all 10 fingers to play on the keyboard, while on the guitar, notes sound one at a time.
If you strum really really fast, you can talk about a max of 6 notes.
10 notes sure create more harmony than one.

As a guitar teacher, it's actually better to learn piano. I've read a few replies, and it's true that guitar is much easier to pick up and make a go of it in a short period of time. Piano however, gives the individual a better insight on how music is played and composed. Once I learned a few things on piano, I've found the theory incredibly easy to put toward my saxophone and guitar playing.
For the record though, my piano playing really sucks!!!!

It's a lot easier to stretch a 13th chord out of the piano than squish fingers together on gtr

Play piano first. All other instruments are much easier to pick up after that. If you play guitar first, you may regret not taking your parents offer for piano.
Think of it this way, it's cheaper to buy a guitar on your own and have your parents fork out the money for a piano. If your parents buy you a guitar, and then you want a piano, you might have to shell out some big bucks for one.
DO THE PIANO AND DO THE GUITAR THING ON THE SIDE!!!!
By the way, I'm really screwing myself as I am a guitar teacher.

This forum is a choice between learning one instrument or the other. It isn't about the choice of instruments or effects on different songs. It's a general commentary on which instrument to learn first.
I think it's a bit obvious that you would choose one or the other instrument for any particular song. You would choose the one you beleive would match the song in the format you are doing it in.

what about the best of both worlds? a keytar? ;)
I play both piano and guitar. I'm not really great at either but I started off on piano. In all honesty, I'd say pick the instrument that you -want- to start with first. Because you're never going to get good at anything you don't want to do.
