I think it's a good idea mate....although as zel said...opens the way for a lot of idiots to spoil things...maybe if it was members only ?

I'm thinking it would be dangerous with... ummm.... certain combinations of members online :-p (present company definitely included!)

the arguments against?
-Would people then not post - which creates a larger board and therefore drawing more notice to it via google and such....??
-Would people get entrenched in chat and not do the multiple window technique that allows you to, say... help a newbie here, post a file from your collection there.... while being involved in a little War Zone post war in another window...??

just food for thought!

*cough cough*
It's an integrated IRC Chat;
been here for years... ;)

If there are concerns about non-members having access to it --and I can't say I disagree-- we can probably change everything to use a vB-hack that will prohibit non-member access.

As far as replacing posting goes... There are only about 1 or 2 connections per day (for less than a minute). Not much competition there.

BUT, it's there. Feel free to use it.

P.S. There are some good uses for a live chat room that wouldn't distract from the boards here:
Integrated Streaming Audio Server - someone could run a shoutcast server and display info in IRC channel (using winamp and Wmon plugin). mp3 OR MIDI audio could be streamed...
Live trivia, or other IRC games
Sharing files that are not permitted for posting here
Live help with site issues
Live help with equipment cofiguration, hardware or software issues
Live collaboration - cooperative MIDI file sequencing or other joint projects.
Site staff Private channel for dynamic site discussions. Great way to administrate/moderate a site in real-time.
Sharing other projects that exceed attachment size for posting here (or other works/files that you (obviously) own copywrite to...

Don't be afraid to use it. If you don't know how to use mIRC or any other IRC client, use the java applet.
