The most I can say is that it is very different, coming from a semi-disturbed person...The drums/what ever the noise in the beginning is kinda turned me off on the whole midi..

i think you have some great ideas, however, in this particular song I felt as though the timing might be a bit better. The music seemed to have urgency to it in it's emotional state but I'm referring to cadence.
That's my only critique. I enjoyed the way it made me feel because music should reveal emotions.
Keep it up,

Warning: These are train-of-thought critiques that I might abandon on a second listen - but there're SO many to listen to!! This means... I won't pull punches and I won't edit myself... understand though... if it weren't well worth the listen I wouldn't comment!
'riptail'.... surreal..... Wish MIDI came in surround sound! cowbelly sound too punctuated in beginning... not sure I love trombone/brass?? timbre at 3 minute mark.... Love the drum motif.... love the grow/fade..... I don't think it sounds disturbed at all... that's some nice music! Two thumbs Up from the Turnip!
aboysdream... the opening is cute... but a bit cliche.... swells in 1st min could need to be more gradual so as not to distract from other voices... same in solo strings at 2:20 and 3:20 and a few other spots.... not a standalone piece... perhaps a middle movement with more structured movements on either side? Waxes long around 5 minutes... I want to hear where its going by now.... trills around 5:40 not pretty in that nasal voice.... something gentler maybe? Might lose effect everywhere else..... 7:12 overswell.... Sounds like an epic improv..... Improv loses its appeal when its not contrasted by structure...
Childrenatwar..... turn down the drums at beginning.... balance.... Minimalist piece almost.... hmmmmm.... liking this so far..... B section (2:10ish)....I'd almost like complete silence after those orchestra hits - even 1 lost beat.... perc ostinato has merit though 3's in cymbal 4's overall, neat effect once the mind stops balking.... 3:30 electronic voice that's added (not using sequencing program to listen, DUH!) is too much... nice woodwindy stuff around 4:30..... big bad NO to the ending.... perhaps reprise your A melody for a classic ternary form?? sounds less-than-incomplete.... ill planned even... Beginning was very fun to listen to!
Okay.... More later, its bedtime! You REALLY have some interesting stuff here! Riptail is my reigning fave for the moment. perhaps that's why you posted it first? I find myself wanting to know more about the mind the conceived the music.....
Welllll... I do edit myself for obvious misspellings.... yeesh!

Welllll... I do edit myself for obvious misspellings.... yeesh! This has go to be the best of all the comments i've ever gotton. every you say is right. there is a lot of editing to be done. and much of the works are impov. but there is more to come, that is more stucture and planing, most of the music is 1 month to 2 years old. I just strated MIDI almost 2 years ago. and yes MIDI does come in surround sound! If you convert it Wave or MP3. Hit my website and you will be takin there. Riptrail, EXP, and Walk of the grave are all Surreal i guess, thank you very much for the comments.

Here's a first go. I intended to listen to all and make comments accordingly, but got busy at work today, so I'll just post what I've got so far:
Firstly, let me say your sequences seem quite well-constructed, with some attention paid to production values. My comments come from the point of view primarily of composition, and secondarily of sequencing. (And I'm sure I've got more to make, but will refrain for the present in the interest of temporal expediency ;)).
RipTrail: Very nice ambient piece. The primitive percussion sounds and flutes bring the piece a little bit of savagery and primality that is satisfying in fulfilling a unity of expression. I like the swelling strings and brass; they seem almost to be contending for something more peaceful. This is very good sequencing: dramatic and artistic. This is my favorite so far, also.
A Boy's Dream: Interesting imagery at the beginning and end. :) This seems to be a somewhat free-form improvisation over an orchestral background. Also nice ambient music. The modal melodies lend the piece a feeling of yearning, which seems quaintly appropriate. I'm not sure I completely buy into the total improvisatory nature of the piece; its structure seems on the weak side to me. I'm guessing that's intentional on your part. :) Also, the length is daunting considering the relative lack of structure, but again it makes for pleasant background music.
Children At War: More slightly improvisational modal melodies built over an ostinato, almost passacaglia-like figure. I'm not sure exactly how the music evokes the imagery implied by the title, but the music is fairly coherent, if a bit rambling. This piece honestly reminds me of MIDI game music from the early 90's, like Doom, Hexen, or Shadowcaster.
Did I Pass You By: Cello and Pan Flute play improvisitory melodies above a string basis of pulsing chords. This is almost minimalist in tone, resembling slightly the feel of a Philip Glass piece. I like the touch of the harp, but it's almost too inaudible. I also like your fairly fresh use of percussion sounds that complement the feel of your pieces.
Fleetzan: The F Horn beginning is nice - strange sounding, but suitable. I especially like the polysynth featured in the first and second middle sections of the piece. The broken solo lines are effective with their striking intervals.
Nice work indeed, Music!
I'll have more comments on the other sequences as time permits, and will be glad to elucidate the above comments if you like.
BTW, Jeanie, thanks for the recommendation - this is a fun thread.

I realize on rereading this comment that it sounds self-contradictory. What I mean is that the piece has a coherent sound, but its direction seems rambling. Pardon my lexical precision, but it's a fetish of mine. :)

ZelRiptha and others
Thanks very much for your insight. What is really amazing is how most people see through the music and describe some of my most inner feelings, and what I also wanted to portray in the music. But your comments, by far have the deepest insight I have read to date. Fleetzan was one of my first Midi’s and I am going to do a third rewrite of the peace. I think it needs a little more polysynthetic sound, and fix a lot more of the volume, expressions, panning, and lead notes. I will post it here when it’s done. Yes I would love for you to elucidate more if you have the time. Comments like this are extremely valuable to all artists, Midi and other wise. Glad people like you are around, all of you. I also like to Critique Midi’s for other, because I know that input is important to an artist development. It’s kind of like having 100's of music teachers at the same time. Midi is still very new to me, I have learned a lot in the pass two years. And today I’ve learned something from ZelRiptha (and others) … music can speak words without saying them. It can be used as a language. looking forward to more of your insights.
Thanks all of you

P.S. too bad I didn’t have more MB bucks, other wise I would share some. Well some to in the future when I become an MB thousand ire:thumbsup:

More from earlier......
didipassyouby:
uncomfortable with seeming lack of tempo in beginning..... woodblock motif in and out - kinda like it, just when you realize its gone missing 'clip clop'.... like the "So-Fa-Mi-Fa" motive throughout.... incredible ideas.... again lacking some form that would make them more mainstreamable.... if its not your goal no biggie, but something to consider.... gives the feel of many distractions - hence the title? Solo cello on ending nice.... descending scale at 2:30ish anticlimatic...
fleetzanb
Teach me Teach me! I wanna know how to pan drums on one channel like that!! ;) French Horn in opening is SO forceful that I notice its loss soon after.....descending scale at 3:00 too long, gets old.... movie soundtrack music... maybe too many moods for a non-narrative piece... about half that many themes (but make two pieces 'cause they're all good ;)) and repeated sections after contrasts make for 'easier' listening... wanted it to end at with a major chord resolving from the 6:30 mark....d@mn happy ending gets me every time
fromtheheart
feels improvised again.... discernable form lacking... (forgive me, I like form in music).... meditation musicmaybe, it drifts......
sadder
you enjoy the multiplemeter feels (violin vs. pad)..... so do I in this case.. like pizzi string echo of horn.... don't like that it acts independently of horn at 1:45, decreases its effect..... brass motive could use less reps before 2:30... miss pad in ending perhaps leave it in but relegate it to following meter?
Better submit before I accidentally delete all of this... more shall follow :)

m3M3/diminished is a neat effect.... playing both at once in strings and horn is very disturbing, in a good way for this title.... almost too tonal at m.57ish in choir aahs.... I like how one solo voice blends into another.... pentatonic improv over an ostinato is a talent you have.... I especially like the bell font :) Very much suits title..... improv-ish nature again defies form a bit...
the other side of space
fade off of 'applause' more early in piece? meant to reflect static?.... sense of mystery..... again wishing for surround sound on this machine :)... like the high freq tremelo strings :)... 1:30 piece sounds 12 tone in nature (opening staff to see if its so) nope - not strictly, more random, great effect.... again I ask.... narrative? Are there pictures in your mind that match these sounds? ... nice "mud' around 4:20! Unreal effect at the end... pedal down and held or do I need to restart?? ;)
Ummm... restarting now!!

I like it.... the ONLY thing that was struck me as odd was m.15... an allusion to what was to come, yes, but I was just digging the build to repetition and the descending note was anticlimatic... other than that whimsical fantasy and fun!

I was going to review all of them in the order you posted, then I decided to do them in whatever order came up in my program (alphabetically)... which might be the same (at times), maybe not. Eventually i'lll get to all of them. though I did the first one you posted first. There are sort of "as they come" comments, but some I went back and added to by the end of the piece or as I looked over the music in Noteworthy (my midi program)
Riptrail - very eerie, futuristic. liked orchestra/brass chord hits that occured at the begining and end of the piece. Bell motif fit in well, I liked the sounds created by the bells. I didnt like the (according to my computer) Cello part starting at 1:20... I liked the part, but (much as I love cello) I think that the melody would be better suited to a woodwind...it grew on my as the piece progressed, but initially I thought that the string sound clashed too much with the flow of the piece. I liked the use of the pan flute, great sound for the piece; it added to the "eerie" nature. I like some of the motifs used, especally in the higher register such as at 2:00. Overall, very awesome composition job!
aboysdream-too disjuncted at beginning, dont relaly know what effect you were going for, it didnt suit me. many times melody in flute at begining was way too busy. Simplify it and it will have a better, more emotional effect. liked brass at 1:40. pizzicato strings awesome effect throughout piece. 1:49 the initial transition to the violin melody was almost too sudden and I would have started it by blending with a woodwind like the clarinet to make the transition less sudden between two types of instruments. 2:35 liked the pizz. ritardando effect through rhythmic lengthening of notes. melody could be brought out more at times. balance a little off sometimes. 4:10 didnt like busy flute party, needed simplification. 4:55 transition violin-> flute too empty, keep more harmony in the background, it "felt" like a section forgot to play :) 5:50 melody seems to be taking up space rather than furthing melodic development..it sticks out becusae it is so out of place among the over melodic and harmonic movement of the piece. 6:10 few measures of fast melody seemed out of place. 7:28 fast melody movement stood out. 7:35-7:50 increasing intervals need more melodic interest, either through more interesting rhythms or though harmonic counterpoint. 8:57 I didnt like the minor second, dissonance is out of place. 9:215 - 9:25 too empty with not enough melodic interesting. keep up the harmonic accompaniment or add some counterpoint. interesting applause effect at end. Overall I liked it, some great melodic moments and awesome harmonies at times. I dont know what style you try to write it, its great through. Its like a constant dance between major, minor, and modal music. I like ^_^
childrenatwar- i LOVE the rhythmic setup for the piece, especally when the original harmonic elements are repeated doubletime. Melody started a bit too fast, work into it with same melody, just more pauses and build into the full melody. i'd want more harmony during original occurances of the melody, some 4th and 5th harmonization (is that a word?). 2:00 like the motif with temelo strings. 2:25 awesome chord movement, would like more reccurance of strong power chords, seemed angry/more emotional. 3:00(appx) need more heavy orchestra hits thorugh 3:10, seemed a bit empty. 3:23 love the chord use! 3:33 good return to motif 4:20 need movement in melody with chords and counter point, climatic part of piece, and seemed to die out a bit there. 4:35 has awesome movement between the voices and rhythmically. The ending seemed a bit too abrubt and anticlimactic. Seemed to end right at the height of the piece. I would have returned to the first melody and closed with it to wrap it up, the end was just sort of like "oh... you mean its over?" It didnt have enough closure for what was a really awesome piece.
I'll listen to more later tonight (err...morning) or tomorrow (later today for me, actually). My hand is starting to hurt from taking notes :) I hope my comments are helpful!

Become a MIDI review!
The idea here a Pixel Arts is to recruit as many reviewers as possible, so that each review would only need to review one Category, thus fewer songs to review. The goal is to give reviews less work, so that they could give better reviews, hopefully giving the participants the best possible review of there work with quality. We really do want to raise the standard. But it seems hard to get people to review. It really is not that much work , what is harder is choosing which of all the wonderful songs is better. That is a challenge in its self. Having the ability to be unbiased is also a challenge, but if you can be unbiased then you will be a great reviewer. Personal I think musically train people tent to be a little bias because they are looking at a lot more detail in the musical structure, and expect a lot more, which can be good. But we need some reviewers with just a good ear, and are unbiased. There is lots of reading you can do on how to review on “Essays” page at Pixel Arts. You don’t have to be a musician to review. But it would be nice to have a good sound card. (Like SBlive) The More reviews we have the fairer the contest becomes as well. It’s kind of like the old say “the more the merry”. And don’t think that contestants are going to question your reviews and call you names, and give you a hard time, because they are going to. It’s part of the job of being a reviewer. But at the same time they also thank you with undying gratitude, for being able to see, feel, and touch their music. You may also find that you will become more intent on hearing the music, you will find yourself playing the same song over and over to gain more insight into the musical work that you are reviewing. You will discover things about reviewing a musical piece that you never thought possible. You will find common ground in all the styles of music that are presented at Pixel Arts. You will also find feeling in the music you may have never seen before. I heard the midi riptail, it sounds good, like a triumph march for me... some sounds do not really work propertly with my keyboard, but I suposse is a thing of configuration. I started to read midis three days ago.. ;P
Congratulations.

What do you Think?[/QUOTE}
Of the "riptail" midi .. I really like it .. it has an Eastern (Oriental flavour to it) very unusual, well done Mote.
"A Boy's dream" .. was not so keen on, just not my style of music.
"Children at War" .. Yes, it appealed to me much more.
"Did I pass you By ?" .. Unusual sounds .. very atmospheric .. parts of it would be great music for a questing game .. something to listen to whilst you are trying to get your hero to the next stage !
"Fleetzanb" .. some very prominent stereo effects .. I found it quite disturbing, very spacey.
"From the Heart" the melody line was lovely, the balance of the sound was a little uneven though .. I would have preferred the melody to be predominant.
"Sadder" .. the intro reminded me of whale sounds somehow, it certainly is a sombre little tune to start, quite eerie .. then it picks up a little after the first third but still keeps the initial sadness.

riptrail.mid is a really good oriental eastern flavour to it. This reminds me of some of the kung fu type films with the hero on a journey across the vast landscape. Very well put together with lots of different midi voices which keeps the interest. It seems to swirl.

Aboysdreamb.mid I was not as keen on like the riptrail.mid. It seemed a bit disjointed to me and I could not really get into the music.

childrenatwar.mid really grabbed my attention with the driving triangle and incessant beat which acts as a good backdrop to the cello/strings, the addition of the xylo adds some depth. This one seems to grow on you. I like this one.

didipassyouby.mid was not my scene. It did not do anything for me.

fleetzanb.mid reminds me of some film music, almost eastern oriental or roman content. Could almost be an RPG game music.

nostradamus.mid is very atomspheric, a lot of your midi files seem to be quite heavily influenced by the Orient.
the dark sun is definitely a film track for a deeply philosophical/supernatural feature on the Spanish Inquisition, it reminds me of the film Revelation

journey.mid is really good incidental music! Camels across the desert, music portrays their swaying, warrior type nomads. Nice to hear so really good music in midi, it is inspiring me. Must go as I have some compostion to do! I may be some time. Will check the other midi files very shortly.

fromthe heart.mid and sadder.mid seemed to me a bit sombre and did not seem to go anywhere.
Walkofthe grave sounds very in game music. It is very atmospheric with the bells and spooky cellos.

theothersideofspace1/2.mid is very atmospheric. This could be interesting incidental music for films etc. The sound seems to be like droplets of water and getting louder. This was good.
walkinthepark.mid is a soundscape, like the stereo spread but the low cello sounds seem to be a bit overused in a few of the recent midi files. Can get a bit to same sounding instruments.

whalecall.mid di not seem to do anything for me
mortal.mid was superb, could be the opening of a tense action thriller with a knock on the door and helicopter in the air. Excellent tension generated by the low single note piano.

usatears.mid was heavy with emotion, very evocative. I liked it.
x2 seemed more incidental music again, quite mysterious, and a busy piece. Reminds me of lots of undercurrents running together in a supernatural mystery.

you save my soul.mid is an intriguing one to listen to with a lot of different things happening. Really good arrangement that kept my attention.
to acquarius.mid seems to be a bit non descript. It did not do anything for me.

the blue sea.mid is attention grabbing with the stereo spread and instruments and volume fades. This definitely is a relaxing piece of music. one of my favourites.
chinaxmas.mid is very good, and of course very chinese!

spacemind2003.mid is evocative incidental music, perhaps in the genre of Alien film.
peace of xmas.mid I find unusual. Seems to evoke images of snow falling and feeling quite cold.
Out of interest what pc software/ hardware are you using to compose the music?
