Just whether the mass out there like or dislike WIN XP and do u think it is a more stable operating system?

My personal (humble) opinion...
I have tried it and did not like it. I found the 'fresh new look' to be insulting and vulgar (a joke), and while there are a few neat features Windows 2000 did not have, I gave it up and am sticking with Win2K.

That is a comparison between WinXP and Win2K... If you want to compare XP to ME, 98 (1s tor SE) or 95 - I would recommend XP over any MS-DOS based OS due to the stability alone.

Also, there is a ton of spyware coded directly into XP and many of its standard-issue programs. There is a great proggy called XP AntiSpy that removes the spyware and settings. I've attached it here... I would NEVER run XP without this.

Also - I wouldn't have too much faith in the firewall that comes standard with XP. If it will not raise a finger to stop the any of the spyware traffic, what else won't it raise a finger to stop? I would go with a 3rd-party firewall without any hidden agendas.

In short - quite a bit I didn't like about XP: the activation scheme, the spyware, the firewall, the revolting new look... But on the whole it is (IMHO) better than any MS-DOS OS... Linux still kicks all their *sses...
Ok I'll shut up now ;)

Ah cool.. thanks man. I was trying to diable ms messenger. That program is stubborn.

I think the home edition of xp sucks. Luckely I have the pro version. :)

I used Win Blinds to modify my desktop to my liking. (and I match my computer) Take a look in the 'Post your Desktop' thread in chit chat.

I've tried out a bunch of OS's. I'm on XP Pro and ME right now. ME is better in my opinion. It's much easier to find software, it actually COMES with an aspi manager (makes ripping CD's a reality). You don't have to undo all that funky reorganisation of things. The firewall is annoying, I just ended up putting in my same old one. XP is a little more stable, and it's a little faster, but there's a lot that you'd have to get used to that's kinda a nuisance. Most annoying of all, is that just like most NT's it won't save in anything smaller than 32kb chunks. If I remember that had something to do with stability and proper usage of clusters. So all those little text files with lyrics, all your saved or home made html files, instruction manuals, help files, data files, you name it... will all take up 32kb a piece, even if they're all only about 4kb in actual size. If I still had my NT5 (aka 2000 Pro) I'd probably have used that instead. Right now I'm stuck with XP Pro... heh, the supposed NT6... but it's too dummied.

I've tried Win98, WinME, Win95 etc., and Win98 has been pretty good and stable, but WinXP wins hands down - nice interface, easier to use, quicker than previous versions, stable and more features. I've got a dual boot with WinME, but I never need to use WinME as I've not had any major problems with WinXP.

I'm gonna contradict Most of you. My oppinion of XP is it is fan-flippin'-tastic. I have had every operating system exept 2000 & NT since windows 3.1 and XP is on the level with 3.11 for being the best. hereis my short reviwe of them all

WIN 3.1/3.11: Yeah! well-cool! one of the most stable operating systems there is. but it is slow, even on our old 586 system.

WIN95: Give me 95 any day. It sped up our 586 no-end. the 1st version was stable, relyable, fast, sharp on the net and it had a masterfull new look. more user friendly than 3.11

WIN98: You must be jokeing?!? this is the WORST OS there is. it is slow, the install took forever, even on our "new" 500Mhz Pc (it was new then) it is slow booting up, it is un-stable by that I mean it freezes every 5 minuets, it was slow on the net and "windows update" didn't damn well work!!

WIN ME (Millenium eddition): Ahh! this came on the PC that was all mine! I'll be truthfull, I bought an eMachines PC so i got a pre-relise version of Millenium eddition on the origonal restore CD but even on the old 566Mhz processor in this computer it booted up in 4 seconds, ran the net faster than ever before, windows up-date actually worked, allthough I had to disable automatic up-date cuase it was a pain in the A**E but stable, allthough not to be run on packard-bell computers.

Win XP (eXPerience for those who don't know) Yes! Yes! Yes! I have waited for what seems like forever for an OS that matches 3.11/95's stability with ME'S "system restore" something that ran the net faster still and had windows up-date! This is it! The install only took 25 min on my 1.8Ghz (yeah, I up-graded considerably since I bought this eMachine but i still say eMachines rule!) It boots up fast, It runs the net like a bullet, it hardly ever crashes and the new "start" bar is soo cool!!!! But if you get XP YOU MUST go to www.windowsupdate.com IMMEDIATLY you get your internet connection up-and-running on it. unless you get it bang-up-to-date it won't function with some of your older USB hardware.

That is my honest oppinion of all operating systems, exept for one, I have an Apple iMac lap-top, commonly knowen as an iBook with mac OS X on it, OS X is the best non-windows OS to get.

advancedflea - what is take on a comparison between Linux (say... Mandrake or SuSe distibutions) and OS X?
I've used Linux quite a bit and love it - how the the stability, security and user-friendliness/ease-of-use compare?

I love Linux, but will be the first to admit that there is a steep learning curve.

To be brutally honest with you, they had Linux on our school computers at one point, and I hated it. It was about as stable as a house built on jelly and you'd have better security WITHOUT Linux's built-in firewalls. if anyone reads this then gets linux, I will hit you.

Yeah, Allong with windows 98, Linux Is terrible for stability, not to mention user-friendlyness. my advice is either stick with 95 or get XP if you want a high-powerd system. or for non-windows PC'S get an iMac with OSX

theARTiSAN
08-04-2002, 09:06 PM
???
I've never heard that before either... I've used Linux Slackware, SuSe, Redhat and Mandrake (all being fairly recent versions mind you) and have found the stability to be better than any version of Windows (NT or not).
What distributions(s) of Linux were you talking about?

advancedflea
08-05-2002, 03:40 PM
Not a clue! lol. I just used it on the schools computers, that is all i know! lol.

Oh, BTW, anyone reading this who has herd the rumor that XP wipes out your hard drive after useing norton anti-virus 2002/norton systemworks 2002 it is totaly UN-TRUE. I have had windows XP since x-mas and norton system works 2002 since october and it hasn't had a problem, Infact Norton systemworks helps my PC run faster (I have 1.8 Ghz and sometimes it does slow down) than ever! so by all means keep your Norton programs, and keep them up-to-date, especially Norton Anti-virus

open source is the future. when windows finishes its ride from 95 to 98f to 98s to Mellinium to god knows what, an open source os's will be the future. i dont believe anyone can do a fare comparison on windows operating systems without getting hands on experience with windows 2000.

As far as personal computing and daily life computer use windows 2000 is by far the best and most stable operating system. I will be the first to say that Windows Mellinium is the worst ever to leave microsofts doors. Memory management in windows mellinium is poor, almost scary poor.

XP may run fine for those who have it pre-loaded on a machine built to run windows xp. However I would never suggest anyone install xp onto a system not fully specked out for it.

Thats just my opinioin I could be wrong.

Andy, I'm gonna be blunt as I can with you. When I bought this computer, it had a sticker on that said "designed for windows 98" allthought it cam pre-loaded with a pre-relise version of Millenium Eddition, and that worked.

2 yrs after (christmas 2001) I had up-graded it to a 966Mhz Processor (1.8 now) 60GB HDD and 384MB of RAM. not quite what people would call enough to run XP, but Ignoreing what people said about it, I bought XP and put it in, it worked straight off and I have never had to re-load my system since that day. I will admitt, I up-graded to a 1.8Ghz 2 months ago and that strapped a rocket to the computers back. but my point is, XP worked on my Pentium III 966 (Believe it or not I have a Celeron in it now, Celeron soket 370 motherboards are, in effect, "future proof") I'm not argueing with what you are saying, that XP may not work out aswell for some people as it did for me (one person I know, put it on his 400Mhz pc...Idiotic or what?!?!) but it does work. people just gotta remeber to do a windows Update every month or so. :)

IMHO
3.11: is very stable
9x (95, 98, ME) hmm the worst operating systems ever even though 95 was very radical back then. Stablity kept getting worse and worse.
NT (NT4, 2000, XP) very stable operating systems XP seems to have more problems than the other 2.

I've changed the way I've put them, seems more clear now.
Well some of the operating systems listed here, I've never used or used for a short period of time. One can find articles about operating systems in magazines or online like on cnet.

While XP does have some nice features, it really is a pain trying to get a lot of the "older" software to work on it. It seems like microsoft just wants you to keep spending. (DUH!)

As far as stability...

A lot of people say it's so much more stable. Well, it hasn't been for me. If, by any chance, something happens and you have to shut down, NEVER, and I mean NEVER hit the power button. You need to go through the "proper" shut down routine. If you're computer is frozen, and hitting the power button is your only option, pray while doing so. Everytime this has happened to me, I would get an error message that windows had not shut down properly. It then gave me the option of starting normally. It didn't work. I have had to re-install my XP 3 times now.

advancedflea
09-05-2002, 04:33 PM
That aint a windows XP problem. that is a problem with your computer. perhpas your hard drive is PHYSICALLY damaged? (On the actual disk that is, not the shell) because when my computer freezes, all I do it press and hold the power button untill it turns off, wait a few seconds then re-boot. it does a scan disk and them comes back on fine.

when it comes up with that erro screen, just go to "last known working configureation" you may lose a few drivers, but it doesnt hurt to try it

You're free to have that opinion - but IF I remember correctly, you had said that your experience with Linux was limited to a few Boxes loaded with it at your college, and you weren't even sure what distribution you had tried...

I would honestly advise that you pick a distribution (RedHat or Mandrake are good to start with) give it a fair shake before damning it to hell :D
It is a great OS (IMHO). Yes - a steeper learning curve than Win??.XX, but once you grasp Linux, you will have a more profound understanding of how a Box or OS truely works.
It is the OS that drives the internet we all know and love. That should say something in itself ;)

My favorite Win version (2k)...

Opinions are like Midis - everyone has 'em and some of them suck.
Just sharing from my humble experience. I still use Windows (in a dual boot config. with Mandrake Linux) - but believe me when I say that the day I find the perfect Linux Studio/Audio proggys to replace the ones I use now, I will say bye bye to Windows entirely.

Linux is freely (legally) downloadable from countless FTP servers and sites all over the net, and with it's open-source nature, it has been (and will continue to be) improving by the hour. As soon as they (collective Linux Distributors/programmers) start concentrating fully on ease-of-use and new user friendliness - It may become the popular flavor of pre-loaded Boxes from IBM, etc.

WinXP is the best choice for home users and small companies, IMO. Linux works best for server administration and is (just a little bit) more stable than WinXP. However, compared to earlier Win9X Versionx, XP is a giant improvement.

Yeah, I use windows XP at home. its by far the best that has been released since windows 3.11. Win 3.11 was pretty decent. We never had any problems with it apart from a blue-screen onece every 6 months

I think it is definately better than 98 or ME, it's is a lot more stable and you can make it look like the older versions of windows too!
