I play rhythm and lead guitar in a band. Our lead singer is female. I'm open to suggestions about what songs to play. Please advise me on what rockin songs with female vocals you'd like to hear at a club.

We have a female lead vocalist, too. I like when she sings the old Janis Joplin tunes, and No Doubt the best (e.g. Piece Of My Heart, Move Over, Just a Girl, Spiderwebs, Hella Good). She also sings Joan Jett (Tush), Sheryl Crow (Soak Up The Sun), Pink (Get This Party Started) and Jewel (standing Still), and I WISH she would do some Pat Benetar!

The audience really eats it up when she sings Hanky Panky from Madonna and I Touch Myself from the Divynals, though!

I hope I've given you enough ideas!

Great suggestions guys! Definately Janis Joplin, Pink, maybe 4 Non Blondes what's up, etc) - and this may sound odd, but I've hear 2 bands do kickin' covers of "I Know" by Dionne Farris.

Crossgendering the lead vocals of a song can sound surprisingly good... like John McCrea of Cake singing I Will Survive. You should pick some song with a low guy voice and have her sing it two octaves up... I guarantee it'll make an impact

I sing in a duet and sing fairly rocky stuff. I find that janis joplin and pat benatar goes down well in pubs but so does a lot more modern stuff. I often take slower songs and rock them up like that old one hit wonder 'all i wanna do is make love to you'...that sounds excellent with distortion and a bit of growl. Tina Turner is also a good one as no one sings like a man like she does......oh and melissa etheridge.

I also sing a lot of songs that men generally sing, i just change the key one or two up but be wary of singing them too high.

I've played in bands with female and male leads and I reckon the females cover male vocalist songs very well. If you can do Pat Benatar or Janis Joplin... you can do Jimmy Barnes!!;) ;)

Thanks everybody for the suggestions! I Just wanted to make sure we're playin what people wanna hear. We do Pink, Blondie, Janis Joplin, No Doubt, Garbage, Joan Jett, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benetar, Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne,
Michelle Branch, The Donna's, The Cranberries, Concrete Blonde and lots more. We also do some male vocal songs also & transpose if we hafta. I'll definately share all your thoughts with my band. Check out our website www.unlikeus.com.
Hey snoopyjc I checked your web site & listened to your demos. Which one is you? You guys sound great. Everybody goes wild when we do "I Touch Myself" from the Divynals too. You guys should do "I Want Candy" from Aaron Carter as a goof. "Hanky Panky would be a lot harder for us to pull off. We are mostly a guitar band. Once in a while we'll do some keyboards, but we dont have any sax players. I'm from North Jersey & I'd love to come see you guys sometime.
Thx Again everybody!

Absolutely. The best one I heard was by a local band. They did Enter Sandman by Metallica and it rocked big time.

I think No Doubt is really cool, and the lead singer is a girl. They have some really good songs. Their newer ones would be good to hear at a club, cuz they're a bit easier to dance to. Also, a lot of songs that are done by guys really sound good when a girl sings them. I take singing lessons and when I pick songs, I don't go by who sings them. A lot of songs sound really cool crossgendered. Good luck with your band!

I second the vote for Tina Turner. Few women can pull-off one of her songs, so to do one would be awesome. I am talking about her really rocking stuff though, like steamy windows or acid queen, not the wimpy stuff. She also did a great cover of "the ***** is back", wouldn't that go over well in a pub? cheers.

Which one are you?

I'm the bass player - the big blonde guy with the beard!

FYI: We just added "The Donna's - Take It Off!"
