Lennon and McCartney. But I like the four of them.

All four were at their best when they WERE the Fab Four.

McCartney overall nudges ahead of Lennon, IMHO. I liked Lennon but he is over-rated relatively-speaking. Despite some fatastic stuff, a significant proportion of Lennon's stuff was nevertheless really awful during the Yoko era. McCartney's had his fair share of dodgy stuff, but overall, I think he's never produced anything as appalling as the John & Yoko stuff! As I said on another thread, however, neither Lennon or McCartney was ever as good outside of their song-writing partnership. Pity.

George. The silent Beatle just wailed them chuck berry licks, carl perkins chops, scotty moore jazz rockabilly and still ended up having the most recognizable slide guitar sound in music history.
The others were FAB also though ..

Good though "Imagine" is, and talented though Lennon was, I often wonder how exalted Lennon would really be if he'd never written that one song. My guess is that he'd lose at least 25% of his outright popularity if he hadn't.
The true fans would stick by him, of course, but I'm referring to the casual "Joe Public" fan who only ever mentions "Imagine" whenever the topic of "lennon" comes up in conversation. (no offence, nickman, please believe me, that was not a dig at you. It was just a generalised observation about the public-at-large).
