I am new to all thisw sequencing, etc. I am trying to understand the differences and pros and cons of using MIDI vs. Mp3. My understanding is MIDI's are smaller and that's one advantage. Others have told me Mp3's sound more "real". Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

again, mp3's are recorded digital audio. MIDI's are 'instructions' and simply 'tell' the thing it's running on what sounds to play. Depending on the quality of the thing it's running on determines the quality.

how much of an impact does the sound card have on the quality of the midi?

Your sounds card affects the sound quality of any input source that plays through it – midi, cd audio, mp3/wav, etc. The better the card, the better the midi sounds.
It won't make up for bad sequencing though

midi's are also useful if you want to do something with the music.....sheet music, or something else, mpf3's are if you want to actually just hear the recording of what was originally done

MIDIs. Small, Compact, and have many uses.
MIDIs: you can easily edit them

MP3s: Becoming harder to get thank to the f**king RIAA (and others of their kind) who have shut down Napster, Audio Galaxy (recently) and are now going after KaZaa...
MIDIs: Same story?

MP3's are definatly a great sounding file, however I like MIDI because I can use music software to see the actual notes on the page, it really brings the music to life.

Midis are very versatile, you can use a file to not only play music but with the other data you can add, you can run a lighting rig or vocal harmoniser for a full performance.
