New Guitar Players (I Am)

Hi.

I've only just started to play guitar, and at the moment I'm just borrowing my friend's guitar until I can afford one. I'm just wondering if anyone here could tell me a site that teaches you guitar? I can already read tabs, and I can write tabs because I play piano and can tab things from guitar-piano and piano-guitar. Thanks for any help.

I came accross a site a while back that might help a bit. It's got articles and lessons for different instruments. Some lessons are for platinum (paying) members of the site only, but the basic stuff all seem to be free, you must just register. I had a quick look at the guitar section just now, it's got info on scales, some exercises and practicle things like building a stand, all for normal members.

i learned most of my stuff from magazines like Guitar Player,Guitar Techniques,Total Guitar although theres stuff for the more advanced player,theres always beginners stuff

www.olga.net has some fair lessons within the "all resources/lessons" section ...

honestly though i think the best way (other than a student/teacher situation) is to find a song you like that has been tabbed and sit down and play till your content that it sounds right.. the fact that you like the song will hopefully keep you going (that or you'll utterly hate the song by the time u've finished) . Once you've finished that song move on to one which appears harder. You'll find your limits pretty quickly as to what you can and can't just pick up and play.

One on One teaching is the best...

You probably know your limits...
You know that you aren't going to play anything by Yngwie or Vai..

It depends on what you want to play!
The fact you can read tab is good I guess - but for me nothing beats playing / learning by ear! That's what we do when we play guitar! We produce sound - so by listening and "jamming along" with your favourite artists you can develop a similar "feel" while still having your own style. I agree a teacher can help you develop your technique and theory knowledge (which can be important). The guitar is such an expressive instrument, no matter how you decide to learn make sure you enjoy yourself and experiment to produce your own sound/style.
