I depends on how big of a file you can tolerate vs. the audio quality you want/need.
(They) say that 128kbps is CD quality... Guess again. I've never bought a CD that sounded like most 128kbps mp3s.
If you can stand larger file sizes, I would go no less than 192kbps to keep the quality intact. I encode most of my stuff at between 224 and 256kbps.
Or, if you really need to keep the filesize down, you can try encoding into .OGG format - sounds 1000% better at lower bitrates than .mp3

What's .OGG format? It's sounds good, but is it just a Mac thing? What are the down sides?
