Don't worry too much about it.

In short, "XG" just means the MIDI file is compatible to play on YAMAHA keyboards. "XG" is just some 'random' file extension that YAMAHA made up.

You will find that most MIDIs are GM which stands for "General MIDI."

I've been messing with XG for some time actualy, and it has quite a lot possibilities, if you have such kind of stuff as XGedit or XGgold... To experience the real XG sound you can just download Yamaha Soft Synth and play a real good quallity XG tune

Xg is the yamaha standard midi files. In a short time yamaha is going to release XF midi files which are supposed to be improved over XG files and fantastic.

In addition to GM/XG/GS midi standards, Creative Labs have also created their own SoundFont standard, where you can load up your own custom sounds (just like you can choose the fonts in a document).

zipper03,

All MIDI files are capable of containing lyric data whether GM, GS, or XG. Any sequencing program should allow you to enter, modify, or view lyric data in a MIDI file. I use Cakewalk and WinJammer shareware, but there are many others.

Also, you can use a Karaoke player, like the VanBasco Karaoke Player (http://www.vanbasco.com/) to view MIDI lyrics in real-time while playing the file.

Winamp's MIDI plugin also has Karaoke capabilities.

You should read this informative article: www.yamaha.co.uk/xg/html/h_whatxg.htm

The difference is not that spectacular. Even on a Yamaha keyboard.

Nope, it's just Yamaha's version of GM.
