panning to 64 doesnt affect stereo / mono..it just means you are playing a
stereo file panned to one side. Mono should still come out of the two
speakers...

It is getting slightly offtopic, but...:
I don't know oif it is a good idea, because this way you shortcut one of the
channels, that could be worse than just taking the other with a stereo jack.
Both aren't mixing the output from the left and right channel.

Yes.

I recently bought a new software, Cakewalk Music Creator. It has a
button to do this. *However*, I see absolutely no effect on the MIDI
audio when I use this button. Kinda frustrating.


I also would like to change the stereo MIDI file to a mono MIDI file.

If all of the instruments are already panned to center, it will
work. Also, if there are panning messages within the file, you'd need
to specifically filter them out, otherwise setting them only at the
start of the song won't stop it from changing within the song.

On most synths there is no simple, universal way to do that.
Panning won't change a *stereo* instrument to mono, and some synths
have stereo instruments. Drum kits on many synths are set up in
stereo. Also, many synths have panning messages which work using
sysex or NPRNs, neither of which will be affected by changing the
channel pan message value.

Anyway, this is synth specific stuff. Most modern MIDI synths are
stereo, and do not offer a simple way to yield mono output because
most people wouldn't find it useful.

Maybe you could try panning all channels to one side? Not sure how
far it will affect drum kits and stereo instruments, some of them may
not allow a channel to be panned to nothing.

Hmm, why do you need it in mono? Can't you simply make the audio
output of your soundcard or speakers mono? Either with a switch --
some speakers have a mono mode -- or using a signal combiner, either a
mixer or preamp, or even simply a Y-cable connector (on most sound
cards it is safe to connect the two outputs together).

A/ There is no such format as "mono midi" or "stereo midi". A midi file is a
midi file - it's not intrinsically mono or stereo. Midi is just a list of
instructions for your synth or Wavetable. The instructions tell what note to
play and where to play it. If you set the panning on all the tracks to 64
the same signal will come out of both channels just like audio engineers pan
typically the vocal track to both left and right to produce a mono signal -
ie to the ear it appears to come from the centre.

sets all stereo balance settings to center

with GNMIDI shareware (f. Windows) filter operation you can delete all
balance controllers, default value is center after a reset (e.g. GM
Reset).
With GNMIDI shareware operation "Quantize controllers by expressions"
you can calculate balance controller to new values e.g. all values 0-127
to center value 64.

with GNMixer shareware (f. Windows) you can change balance in real time
during playing and save the new mixing result to midi file.

If you are using any software from Cakewalk , set the PAN to 0 or 127 and
sound will be on either speaker only. A value of 64 will produce a virtual
stereo sound . Other softwares have PAN controls also , so just set it the
same.
