I've heard that you can make a talk box out of a microphone and an old amp. Does anyone know how this is done?

When I say Talk Box, I mean a guitar effect that makes the sound from your guitar sound like a voice.

i think he is reffering to the thing that peter frampton uses...
Have seen one in use..it's like a vocoder for guitar...I can't think of any better way of explaining it...

its that piece of plastic pipe next to a mic that goes into the guitarists mouth(looks like their smoking a bong or having a chug of beer whilst trying to play at the same time)

Richie Sambora (bon Jovi) uses one in Its My Life and
Dave Grohl(Foo Fighters) uses one in Generater

Dont know about a homemade jobby.

OK, I've never made one but basically, the plastic pipe comes from the guitar amplifier. It's used to carry the sound (without the use of cables) to the guitarists mouth. I'm not sure if just sticking the end of the pipe in front of the amp will allow enough sound to get thru the pipe, but you could rig up some sort of funnel system maybe.

Anyway, once the other end of pipe is up near the player's mouth the player can start talking and mouthing to change the sound of the sound coming out of the pipe.

Finally, because the player's mouth is next to a microphone, the microphone will pick up these new sounds, and then the PA will amplify them.

As I said, I think that's how it's done. You could however, just get a special electronic vocoder, but they do cost a bit, and I've heard that the results, although quite good, aren't always brilliant.

i once mad one by getting a small 12cm speaker, fixing it to the wide end of a funnle, putting it in a shoe box with the small funnel end sticking out. i ran a length of hose pipe from the end of the funnle up to a mic stand with the mic sent out to the main PA. didnt actualy sound to bad.
