This is an offspin idea from the "I hate it when..." thread...

I started with I hate it when I drop a slice of toast and jam, 'cos it always lands jam side down. Well, it does doesn't it?.

So... you know how, if you throw a cat on the air, it always lands on it's feet?. Right.

Well if you tied a slice of toast and jam (jam side up) to a cats back and tossed it into the air, how would it land?.

And..... if Teflon is truly non-stick..... how come it sticks to the pan?.

Actually saw a programme on tv once about toast and the jam side. They got loads of people in the studio and made them drop toast and counted how many times it landed jam side down. It did indeed land jam side down more often!

Jelly or Jam possess positively charged particles. This is true because Jelly and Jam are "good." They hae not been charged of any crimes or offensives. Now we all, or at least most of us know that Hell is directed towards the center of the earth, and heaven has been accepted as above in the clouds. Newton's law of signs says that opposite sides attract and like signs repel. Therefore, the Jelly or Jam is attracted to the floor and repeled from the heavens. The Jelly or Jam side inevitably falls on the floor.

I think the jam side of the toast is heavier thats why it lands face down.

I'm sure you're right VOG. Considering the relative dimensions of the slice, I doubt that the the centre of gravity is much further away from the non-jammy side than it is from the jammy side, so I can't see that it would make much difference. I'm also considering the air-resistance element of the equation, which should surely cause the slice to plummet earthward, edge-side down.

One could of course argue that after hitting the ground edge-first, that the aforementioned centre of gravity issue would take effect and it would fall over jammy side down, however, as we all know, the coefficient of elasticity effect would kick in, causing the slice to bounce. Now considering the non-uniform shape of your average slice, I cannot see that is would be likely to land in any position other than random.

Think again!!! Back to the drawing board.

Well, to expand on my theory...How many people believe in ghosts. Well ghosts do like jelly they like it very much. The spirits of the people who have passed on beyond living in this world love jelly. They use their powers to try and get the jelly. People are placed under ground, in graves of course. Even if they were not put in grave, before they had buried the dead, they still were on the ground when they died. Over time people have been stupid and built houses over gravesites. So these beings who have decessed and want jelly are inevitably beneath your house. They pull the jelly closer to them but the floor of your house stops it from getting to them. The jelly consequencely falls on the floor

As a side note the attraction of the undead pull is not that strong. In example, Jelly does not fly towards the walls in a masoleum, but it will side down the wall slower than any wall that does not contain the remains of people in it.

Raven I am not questioning your theory just the reason you need to test in a masoleum. Would'nt any old house with people buried under it do? Besides I'd rather eat toast and jam than chuck it at walls--less mess to clean up that way.

Some masoleums have people "buried" in the walls. That is why the jellied bread sticks to the walls better
