I think that tabs are a lot easier to read that sheet music - but I've seen some good progs around that will render midi files as tabs :)

for the most part i prefer tablature or chord charts for guitar, either is fine for bass. However tablatures major downfall (this is especially true with tabs from the net as opposed to tabs from magazines/songbooks etc) is that there is no easy way to show timing or strumming patterns, which can be handy if you dont know the peice you are playing very well, or you cant quite remember parts of the song....
