OS X, Oxygen 8, and Intuem

This is my initial time trying to do anything with the audio midi setup in
Jaguar (its rather hidden) and am trying to trouble shoot why the Oxygen 8
keyboard controller is not seen.

I am borrowing the Oxgen 8 from a friend, to see how plug and play it actually
is, to try it out before I buy ( I have been wary of USB and MIDI support since
OS 8.6, but apparently things are about to work again in the OS.

I am using it in USB powered mode. The LED on the Oxygen shows power is being
received. The mac does not seem to see it

I am using OS X Jaguar 10.2.1

I have download the latest drivers from MidiMan M-Audio good with OS 10.1.5 and
newer

I find the M-Audio USB support plug in 3.1 in the Midi Drivers folder

I ran Midi Audio set up... it showed no devices on any ports, but allowed me to
create one.

I reinstalled the Intuem Try out, hoping it might see the Oxygen. (it looks for
a controller or any Midi device on installation.

I am using the USB port on my keyboard, which is a macAlly iKey, which works as
well or better than the apple keyboard it replaced that came with my g4.

I think I might be experiencing some sort of USB voodoo... I may try one of the
USB ports on the back of the tower, but I doubt it would make any difference.

I have restarted the mac with the device attached in hopes that the driver
would be loaded and the oxygen 8 would be seen. I can 'create' a device in Midi
Setup, but its virtual PLUS I don't know what to route it to... I want it to
play quicktime instruments.

I want to use the Oxygen 8 as a controller to play Quicktime Instruments
(quicktime pro 6.2) into the sequencer Intuem (which is fully functional for
the next 20-30 days) so I can evaluate them for purchase (glad I tried to see
if they would work first)

Am I missing something obvious?

Plug it in.

You needn't go further. The Oxy8 should be there. It's not connecting.
Plug it in.

Plug it directly into the spare USB port on the Mac, if there is none,
clear the space. If you're testing this is what you do.

If that works go buy a powered hub for 20 bucks or whatever

Try it, then you can dismiss it in good conscience.

This should work VERY simply. You practically plug it in and you're
done. I bought one last week and after it not working on an un-powered
hub, I powered the hub and all works fine.

I tried my powered hub (which normally has 3 or four items plugged into it
already, two printers a scanner and a tablet). The inspection window of Intuem,
the seqencer, seemed to suggest there was some sort of communication going on,
but no MIDI events were logged (why have a throbbing blue thingie if there
actually is nothing going on?)

Perhaps if I do not rely on USB power to the Oxygen. Use batteries and or AC
adapter with it (which would make it less elegant a solution.

Perhaps it is the default mode of the Oxygen is wrong, which I would suspect
would be to send Midi envents from the keyboard and knob.

Perhaps I need a newer version of Apple Audio Midi Setup, or a newer version of
Jaguar.

Seems I had to reboot the machine, despite the throbbing to make the
thing actually recognize/understand that the oxy8 was on operational.
I'm unsure. I know I've gotten into some kind of wire-pulling trap
during installation of oxy8, logic and/or making Vision and BIAB work
on the OS9.22 side that demanded a bona-fide reboot. Relaunching finder
wouldn't work.

I know this little oddity. If you switch to the classic, make use of
an OMS-related program, then switch back to OSX you must shut down the
Classic side before OSX will recognize any USB devices related to midi.

That's what I meant when I said plug it in. Plug in the AC. The
instructions in the manual actually say that it must be plugged in, and
that it must be plugged *directly* into the machine's usb port. That
seemed a bit much, but sure enough it demanded AC. I have it in the
hub though. Test it all ways.

I sincerely doubt that. Since there are known demands of the
usb-powering and direct usb port required, I believe that's where your
problems lie.

That's certainly a possibility. Though I think with 10.2.1 you're a
close as you need to be.

I have a quick question about the Oxy8 unit --

It is possible to program this thing in stand-alone mode
to send a certain program change command when I press "C"
and send a different program change command when I press "D".

I bought the unit thinking I've have a bunch of programmable buttons
to control a couple of boxes in my effects rack during a performance.
Thus far, I've been able to control one of these boxes by manually
typing in the program change number, but that's obviously unacceptable
during a performance. Did I make an incorrect purchase here? Or am
I simply missing something?

Thought I'd chime in since I've been support crew for the oxy8. I
don't know, as I just got mine and have barely had a chance to use it
much less plumb the vast regions of the manual. Have you read the
manual?
