midi 4 [foot controller] -> halion softsynth -> Hi Hat -> Need Help

Looking for help here. I have a roland v-club set and Halion softsynth.
I'm trying to get Halion to respond to the 4 foot controller for hi hat
variations. If anyone could point me to a good source for information on
this.. I'd be grateful. I've been through the documentation and don't think
this is covered, at least in the detail that I need.
