So, here's a little investigation, my friends.

Just to settle what kind of karaoke players are preferrable, so please don't spam this thread with commercials

lol sorry this whole board has been tainted lol
When I start contests the I try to make sure everyone on a level playing field so I've tired quite a few of the karaoke players and vanbasco seems quite small for even people that don't have a fast computer but is easy enough for most people to use.
Actually Vanbasco is quite good I use it to play midis and kar files

I use VanBasco and my children love it; anytime they don't know the words to a song, I see if I can find the .kar file - this site has been a really big help, by the way - and they have fun learning the lyrics. Me, too.

As a semi-professional musician using midi/kar files for backing, I have tried lots of different programs, including Van Basco. It is free and reasonably simple to use, but has some limitations.

I now use Karawin - the latest version allows you to play kar and mid files, reads directly from zipped files, and also plays wav and mp3 files including mp3 with id3 lyric tags.
It also has a "second voice" option which displays lyrics enclosed in square brackets in a different color - I use this for displaying chords.

Having now used this program for 3 years, I had a look at the latest Van Basco and it doesn't come close to providing the features I need.

I use my own one, not the best one. It's only in version one. So, there's a long way to go :-)

But I can use it to run slide show (while singing) for my digital photos and it allows me to mute the (vocal) melody which is detected automatically.

I can't mention the name of the player here because it's a shareware and commercial is not allowed

Definitely Van Basco, for midi karaoke.
It's probably the only bug-free midi karaoke player I've tried so far.
Karawin has more features, but is actually cumbersome and kind of buggy.
