I just received my Spring 2003 Blue Note catalogue and there is a new
release of this great Chick album. It has been remastered in 24 bit and
also has 8 new cuts. I am ordering mine in about 10 minutes. For anyone
who has not heard this side, it is a must have. Drummers also will be
blown away by Roy Haynes and his Paiste 602 flat ride. There is still
great debate regarding this. I have heard from a # of reputable sources
that it was a 20" 602 flat and a # of reputable sources that it was an
18 602 flat. I have owned both and both sound incredible. I guess
someone needs to get a hold of Roy and ask him personally! :-)

****...this is a classic CD. I just bought the New York reunion, or
something like that, double CD. I do not care for that as much as the three
Quartets or Nowhe sings, now he sobs CD....I still like the Three Quartets
CD the best out of all I have hard over the years....hating to live off the
difference though...SG

To clarify: It has 8 bonus tracks compared to the original LP. It has no
new tracks compared to the previous CD release.

Robert - Strange you mentioned it, but one of the things I'm always struck
by is Roy's cymbal sound on that recording. Maybe it's the recording or the
fact that it's a trio, but that sound just sticks in my head (no pun
intended).

This remaster was released on July 16, 2002...over a year ago. There
have been a few threads on it, the latest being part of the "Well done
Sum1" thread. I've had mine since last year some time.

To be fair to Chick, he has released a fair amount of uncompromising
acoustic combo stuff in addition to the fusion (e.g., Three Quartets,
Akoustic Band, Time Warp, Tribute to Bud Powell, Origin, New Trio).
Any thoughts on how NHSNHS compares to some of these later efforts?
Specifics are appreciated.

To me it NHSNHS just sounds fresher. At that point in Chick's career it was
an important step. All the later stuff, while good musically, just doesn't
have that spontaneous feel to me. Also, Miroslav and Roy Haynes brought
something to the music that none of the other rhythm sections did on the
later recordings. Miroslav and Chick were contemporiries and Roy certainly
more experienced but they really seemed to gel. The later groups are more
'Chick with his rhythm section' to me. Of course I'm older and by the time
I had heard some of Chick's later acoustic trio stuff, I was already
spoilied. For those who have discovered this stuff first, they may hear it
entirely different. That's the beauty of great improvised jazz music.
I realize you wanted specifics and I gave you generalizations. Sorry.

Chick's Circle band recordings on ECM with Barry Altschul and some also with Anthony Braxton were monstrous. IT
is really sad that so many people know Chick from that horrible Elektric Band crap.

Glenn,
I agree with your assessment. NHSNHS is a real classic. The other bands sound
like guys getting together so play and in many instances, show off their chops.
That is THE biggest problem with so many of the guys today who grew up playing
fusion. This is especially true with drummers. Guys like Weckl sound like they
are thinking all of the time. They also have worked out so much "drum crap"
ahead of time, that they are more interested in getting their "drum crap" stuck
in the music rather than just listening and playing music. What I have to wonder
with a guy like Chick now is, why keep up with this dated Fusiony crap? I am
sure Chick is well off enough $ wise where he could just stay with really
playing the ****. Everyone knows he can play his ass off too. I am not saying he
has to set up a trio like Keith Jarrett has with DeJohnette and Gary Peacock,
but he really could do some wonderful ****. I am looking forward do hearing
these extra tracks on this new issue.

The "Akoustic Band" release was impotent. Good idea, but zero band
chemistry. The Bud Powell release is *excellent*, IMO. The "Three
Quartets" release was good, too. I enjoyed the "New Trio" release,
but a lot of folks didn't. No opinion on Time Warp or Origin, since
I am not familiar with them (although the "New Trio" participants
were part of Origin.)

Much looser than Akoustic Band or the Bud Powell tribute. The fact that
it is a trio makes comparisons to larger groups a bit awkward; I don't
know what "New Trio" is.

Is this the same 13-track release that apparently came out mid-last year?
When I read this post, I almost went out immediatly to find this album (I'd
always heard about it but never owned it) and it wasn't at the local
Tower... and they have a fairly decent selection. Is this a BRAND NEW
release? I think if it were they would have had it...

The bassist in his "new trio" is Avishay Cohen, an Israeli bass
player.
The is another Avishay Cohen in the NY jazz scene which is a great
GREAT trumpet player, jazz of course. Have any of you heard about him
or actually hear him play? Israeli too.
And what about Omer Avital? GREAT double-bass player, in the NY jazz
scene too. Plays with Jason Linder, and leads his own groups. Played
on a regular basis in "Smalls" club. Heard him ?
Just curious....
Nir Brener.

Glenn,
That is one of the most famous ride cymbal sounds of all time. Flat rides,
because of having no bell, produce very few overtones, so you get basically all
stick attack. While this is great for that sound, it also makes them horrible
for versatility. You get no sound of you crash them, no sound if you play
mallets on them and unless you have a rivet or 2, you get no sound with brushes.
I personally gave up on them years ago. I tried one again not too long ago and
while the stick sound was wonderful, I could not justify have a part of my
musical set up that was so limiting. I can get an infinite array of sounds from
my standard rides, so I just use 3 20 rides and get all the sounds I could
need! Yes, I could add a flat as a 4th cymbal, but 4 cymbals is just not my cup
of tea. ;-)

I have owned both 18" and 20" Paiste 602 flats. It is the cymbal, not the sticks.

Good reading skills, Robert. JC's original Blue Note CD *has* the "new"
cuts. The 2002 release is just 24 bit, which apparently is not enough to
attract him.
The LP had 5 cuts. *All* CDs have 13. The extra 8 are from the LP "Circling
In."

Funny you should put forth that idea, because that seems to be exactly
what he is doing. I don't think he's had an "elektric" release since
the mid-90's.
Thanks to all for the info. NHSNHS was a little before my time; I'm
not a completist and that one always seemed to slip through the
cracks. Now I'm motivated to pick it up, though.
A final question: any thoughts on Steve Gadd vs. Roy Haynes as a
straight-ahead drummer, particularly with Chick? Gadd can be heard on
"Humpty Dumpty" (from the album "The Mad Hatter"), "Friends," and
"Three Quartets." I know Gadd isn't considered a jazz legend the same
way Haynes is, but his playing blows me away on the Chick stuff. I
can't recall enough about Haynes' playing to have a strong opinion
about him.

I can't stand Steve GAdd's Jazz playing. He is very stiff and his drum sound is absolutely
****ing horrible. The fact that he would show up to a Jazz gig with the same commercial
sounding kit that he used with Steely Dan is reprehensible to me. Gadd is a great drummer,
but there are about 500 guys I would rather hear play Jazz. There is no comparison of Gadd to
Roy Haynes. Roy is a legend, Gadd is studio legend, but that means nothing in Jazz.

THE key here is that YOU had nothing to do with this post. YOU attacked me

My musical talent has been rebuffed? By whom? You are yet another anonymous
pussy who is unable to use facts when trying to make a point or in an
argument. I suggest you butch up a bit. I'll give you $10,000.00 if you can

Can someone here please clue me in as to how and why fusion is "dated" and
yet the geriatric jazz standards, most of which pre-dated the original
fusion releases... are not, by definition, also dated or out-dated as the
case might be.
This concept continues to escape me.

A while back, before putting my LP of "Circling In" on eBay, I wanted
to gather all of the tunes from that LP together from CDs. I was
really surprised how spread out those tunes were. I think, you'd have
to have the "Now He Sings..." CD (By the way, wasn't the song: "Now He
Beats the Drum..." and NOT "...Drums..." [plural] on the original
LP?), and a copy of "The Beginning" (to get "Blues Connotation") and a
copy of "Early Circle" to get the rest. Yanow, by the way, leaves out
"Duet for Bass and Piano #2" in his song listing for "Cicling In" that
was included, too, on that LP. (and it's "...Kelvin", not
"...Kalvin").
....and about "Circle" - yes! great stuff! The Japanese CDs of "Circle
1: Live in Germany" and "Circle 2: The Gathering" are worth the search
too!

Chances are that I won't even find a professional jazz musician that will
admit performing with you. You don't pay your debts, anyway.
You are nothing more than a foul mouthed ex con failure. You make Amos
shine in comparison, which I didn't think was possible.

And that has ??? to do with this thread? The fact that you are a moron

I'm not sure why Nick was asking for a comparison between Gadd and
Haynes (haven't been following the discussion much), but I'll agree with
Schuh that Roy Haynes is a deserved legend (in a jazz pantheon way above
Gadd, sure - Nick, you should definitely (re)acquaint yourself!), but
disagree on his assessment of Gadd, who I thought sounded very good in
the contexts he played in, as Nick points out (also see those early
Steps albums). Coincidentally, a Gadd thread just popped up on
jazzcorner:

Alternately, everything on "The Beginning" is also included as bonus
tracks on "The Song of Singing" CD (except "Percussion Piece" which
is on "Early Circle").
Seriously, this Corea/Holland/Altschul/Circle stuff has to be the most
haphazardly released material around, spanning some half dozen LP or
CD releases: "Song of Singing", "Circling In", "Circulus", "Early Circle",
"The Beginning". I think I have it all now except for "Quartet Piece"
Numbers 1 through 3 from the "Circulus" LP. Does anyone know if these
three tracks are available on CD in any form?
Hopefully Blue Note will someday issue a coherent 2-CD set collecting
all this stuff like their excellent "Complete Is Sessions".

Bradley - I have to agree with all that you say right here - it's a
real mess that cries for a good reissue. Many young guys who are into
the improv scene would really like to (and should) hear this work.
It's stuff that I grew up on and went thru many copies of practicing
drums to. Have yet to see the "Quartet Piece" works reissued at all...

Depends on what you call "fusion." If you call Chick Corea's "The
Leprechaun" fusion, a lot of the sounds are very dated. If you call Wayne
Krantz fusion, then there ain't nothing dated about it at all.

This is lame. I've never seen this person before on this NG (maybe he's
from the percussion group?) but obviously he doesn't have the balls to sign
a name. Where is this coming from? This is the kind of **** that has no
place on this NG. We're having a discussion about music and this person
decides to blast with both barrels. Come on. For all we know this could be
Amos again. This is exactly what Luke talked about in the post on using
your own name. Would this person blast from left field like this and sign
his name? Obviously not.

Glenn,
This is SO typical in Usenet. There are so many cowards out there who post using
phony names. I wish everyone had to post their real name and stand behind their
words. 99% of this thread, even coming from people like Skippy, has been all
lies too. What happens with these trolls is that they can not attack me using
facts, so they sign in under a fake name and start with the crap. When they
start attacking my musicianship, then I know they have hit rock bottom. Just
about everyone knows Skip is a lizard, so throwing that out there is not a
stretch. The key to all of this is keeping it in perspective and laughing with
it. This percussion newsgroup in general is very deluded as to it's collective
place in the world. So many of these guys think that their opinions, 99% of
which have been fed to them by schlock publications like Modern Drummer, are
gospel. They don't realize that it really is about playing music. 99% of these
guys want to be a drum star. Believe it or not, one guy's greatest aspiration
in music is to be on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine. How out of touch with
reality is that? :-)

Wilson, instead of wasting time here hurling baseless accusations, why
don't you spend more time in the shed? Surely, you don't want to be a
third-rate journeyman all you life. Try to learn something from
people like Tabnik, DD Jackson etc. who also post here once in a

Ah, this explains it all. You've got it completely wrong, Shoe.
Personal abuse, especially in the filthy language you prefer, is "rock
bottom". On the other hand, musicianship is what music newsgroups are
all about -- and on that point, you are at the bottom.

So if you have such a low opinion of rmmp and the people who post, then why
do you keep posting yourself? Oh, I know why. It costs nothing to complain
and you don't have to commit to anything. Right up your alley.
Schuh, you small puddle of monkey spunk. Why don't you practice your press

Just wanted to state I LOVE Steve Gadd as a drummer. He was brilliant on
Chick's Mad Hatter.
He was brilliant on SteelyDan's Aja.
And I just finished watching him on Eric Clapton's video, where he was
absolutely brilliant also.
If you can't see this man's genius you are a real jazz snob and even the
genius jazz musicians recognized their's is not the only music in the world
and did covers of other's songs.
Your ignorance is outstanding!!!!
I won't resort to the f word because intelligent people do not need it to
express themselves.

I'm not siding with Rob, because I'm not familiar enough with Gadd to
take any stance on his playing. but Rob did say that he thought Gadd
was a great drummer, just not a great jazz drummer. how is that
different than what you're saying?

Before you get on your high horse, I suggest you read before you make ignorant
comments. I think Steve Gadd is a great drummer. I just don't like his Jazz
playing, especially the sound he gets. I don't know any Jazz musicians who would
out Gadd in the top 100 of Jazz players, but he is a wonderful all around
player. BTW Skippy, this thread is about 40 years old. I'll bet you think Jeff
Hamilton is a modern Jazz drummer too. Now go back to jerking off to your Steve
Gadd CDs and butch up a bit. Sorry, 1 more thing, you claim no intelligent
people use the F word? Ever heard of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, William F.
Burroughs etc., etc.? ALL you have proven here is that you are probably some
non musician college kid who thinks he is cool because he has erectile
problems.

Joe,
This guy just wanted to be a dick. My biggest problem with Gadd's Jazz playing is
the HORRIBLE studio sound on the drums. Hid drums sound like cardboard boxes.

Now that I re read this, the true hypocrisy of this guy comes blindingly
through. Just because my opinion differs from him, he turns the thread into a
personal attack on me. At the end, he then feebly attempts to take the high road
by making an ill informed comment that "NO ONE" who is intelligent ever says
****. Butch up kid. Why is YOUR opinion any more valid than mine?

3 reasons, Schuh: he's more intelligent, he's more articulate, and he's more
a musician than you are. Which isn't saying much, I know. But you did ask.

Schuh, if you spent half as much time in the woodshed practicing as you did
grabbing your dick and challenging people to butch up whatever the hell that
means, you wouldn't be so bloody easy to make fun of. Do you even know
where the one is?

The truly hilarious thing about Schuh's constant alienating of everyone
is that he's shooting himself in his own damn-fool foot. The people that
read this group are, as disheartening as this sounds, his peers....the
only people that would give a passing thought to (making the big mistake
of) buying a recording that he somehow happened to end up on. He
honestly doesn't understand that NOBODY likes him. Plus, he can't
play...I've heard him numerous times. He plays like an idiot. And he
doesn't swing. At any rate, rave away, Schuh....pretty soon you'll find
out how smart your maneuverings really are.

You're is a spot on observation. But, he's been doing this here for years here
and will undoubtedly do it for years more. Very unlikely that the situation
will change.

I can't disagree with you on the cardboard box analogy -- it's true.
He definitely gets a fairly "dead" sound. Funny, when I was playing in
rock bands in high school, the worst thing you could say about a
drummer's kit was that it sounded like cardboard boxes. For some
reason, though, when it comes to Gadd, it works for me.
I guess it depends on the *kinds* of boxes. ;-)
What I really like about his straight-ahead playing is the way he
messes with time. He does all kinds of off-the-wall syncopations,
really ratcheting up the tension and release and making you feel like
you're on a roller coaster ride. I find it much more electrifying than
a lot of standard bebop drumming.
