I'm not totally sure but i think you have to record your midis to wav (audio input) and then convert them to mp3 to do it that way but i dont think there is a way of onverting mp3 to midi as midi is a completely different type of file which is far too complicated to explain

if it were that simple to do, then everyone would be converting songs..Midi is too track specific to be able to convert mp3's..They are in stereo(only 2 tracks) and midi files can have up to 16 mono tracks of information...It would be a lot of work to reassign everything..

You can't convert audio to midi. You'd be wasting your time searching for a converter.

I've been programming midfiles for about 7 years. There are a couple of wave to midi converters I tried that"worked" but by the time you assign, separate, and adjust everything, you end up with a bigger mess than the program finished up with. It's quicker and easier to sequence the song in the first place.
Just want to say first, hello im new :)
This is a physical impossibility. As some people have already said, there are some progs that will convert a recorded sample of a monophonic instrument to midi, but these have very limited use. I'll try to explain the best i can.
MIDI is not an audio format, it is a protocol allowing MIDI enabled devices to communicate.
eg: you could press a key on a synth, say a Juno 106 for argiuements sake, and have it trigger the sounds of another keyboard or module in your studio. (thus eliminating the need for multiple keyboards).
On the other hand, MP3 is a 2 track (1 stereo track) linear digital audio format which can be created from a number of sources (including mixing down a MIDI file)
MIDI files are collections of instructions telling MIDI equipment how to behave.
If you try to remember that MIDI contains no actual sound data, it will become obvious why you cant convert MP3 to MIDI.
Its like saying "Can I scan a copy of a letter then edit the text with microsoft word". obviously you cant, 'coz the scanned letter is a bitmap image and contains no data of the text written on the letter. Do you follow?
Its a one way process - no going back im afraid. Can you not get a MIDI of whatever it is?

Here's an easy way to think of midi. Midi a keyboard to your computer. There are sixteen channels(like 16 wires going to the computer). Pick channel one. Push key down, sound goes on. Lift finger up, sound goes off. the longer your finger is down, the longer the sound stays on. Give each channel a number, ie 34 for bass, or 2 for piano, and oila, midifile created. Of course, it gets much more complicated, but that's the basic. almost like binary code.sortof???

I don't remember the name of the company/model, but I do remember reading a review in either Electronic Musicain or Keyboard magazine recently that talks about a new product that is designed to trigger MIDI notes from an audio source. Wish I could be more specific, but you might search the sites for both mags to see if the review is online.

Supposedly there's programs that promise to convert MP3 or WAV to MIDI; WAV2MIDI, Intelliscore etc. - but none of them have worked for me. It's really too bad though.

found this program called WIDI. its like the rest of them praograms that converts wav to midi but this one converts mp3 to wav first then to midi.
although it only converts it to only one track, its more distinguishable than the other programs i've used.
if you ask me, i'd still rely on trying to learn the song then convert it myself. we filipinos like to call it "mano manong kapaan" :-) its good training for the ears too! :-)

I have only heard of programs that will convert a single instrament in a wav file format to a midi track, i havent't heard any thing good about them.
Since I am the only sequenser in my band it would be nice if there was a program out there that you could put a music cd in your pc and have any song converted into a full midi file, but then im dreaming. Besides, how could you take pride in yout work if you did it that way....

I'm doing an audio engineering course on this subject at the moment... I'll try to keep this short and to the point...
Depending on the wav file it may or may not be an absolute impossibility...
As mentioned above, MIDI is not an audio format, it is a protocol allowing MIDI enabled devices to communicate. All communications are carried in binary... For example an A 440Hz note on a guitar may be translated as 100100110 in binary...
MIDI files are a database of instructions telling MIDI equipment how to play the selected piece or track. Midi varies in size. Most pieces of equipment handle a standard 16 channels. Studios can handle into the 1000's but then again who is going to record in midi when audio is far superior and "life-like"...
Mp3's, Cd's Wav are usually mixed into individual channels or "lines" when recorded.
If a guitar, bass and drums are recorded into a mixer or a music recording program... eg Cool Edit Pro... Then there are usually a minimum of 9 or 10 channels just for those 3 instruments... These are then mixed down to 2 stereo channels...
If this finished cd was then to be converted into midi, it would all be converted into one massive messed up midi channel, and you wouldn't get a seperate channel for drums, bass and guitar on the midi....
If for instance, the one bass guitar was fed into a midi converter you would get a perfect midi conversion (95% of time) due to being an individual instrument...
Hence, the short explanation is as follows...
CONVERSION OF MP3 to MIDI....
1) If the Mp3 is just of one instrument and one instrument only then yes it is possible to make the conversion
Note: Drums is not one instrument in recording... Drum is usually counted as 8 channels or "instruments"... 1 Bass Drum, 3 Toms, 1 Snare, 2 Cymbals, 1 H/h...
2) If the Mp3 consists of more than one instrument than NO it is not possible...
I hope that was helpful and not too confusing...
