Is there any commercial software out there that will effectively remove
vocals from a sound track.
Thanks

If a few conditions are just right, you don't need exotic tools. Lead
vocals in popular music are often mixed in the center, whereas much of
the rest of the arrangement is off center. By simply subtracting the
channels, you can get a mono mix that has the lead vocal greatly
attenuated. You may still hear the reverb of the main vocal, since
that isn't usually symmetric.

The biggest problem I've had with this trick is that sometimes the
kick drum and/or bass guitar is mixed in the center as well, which
means those get lost. A workaround is to boost or cut (doesn't matter
which) the lows on one channel only, before subtracting. If you're
carefully with the frequencies, you can keep the lead vocal balanced
in both channels (so it will cancel), but force the bass to be
different (so it won't cancel).

Rick,

Yes, Vogone:

www.mtu.com/basics/vocal-eliminator.htm

You can also do the exact same thing for free - if you have an audio editor
program - using the instructions in my article "The truth about vocal
eliminators" linked here:

www.ethanwiner.com/articles.html

Also, none of the freebie programs I've seen do a very good job, because
they just remove all content in the center, including the kick drum and
bass. So Vogone or my article instructions will give you much better results
if quality is important.

**** that, I want a commercial software that will effectively ADD
vocals to an instrumental track...so I don't have to deal with diva
singers and those interminible sessions waiting for Ms.Thing to nail a
decent take.

Nothing does a perfect or even great job doing vocal removal.
I haven't heard anything do as good of a job as the hardware
Thompson Vocal Eliminator. I have the older VE-2+ and it does
a decent job most of the time. The less compressed, and
dense/complicated the mix is, the better the results.

When existing software fails (quite possible), we can still do a decent job
using novel techiques.
