Since the midi features of my Soundcard won't work with WinXP, does anyone know whaere i can find a good emulator?, i know Yamaha SoftSynth XG is meant to be being developed for XP but i still can't find where to download it.

Umm, I figured something out that might help you.
Buy Cakewalk's Music Creator 2002 or Sonar, Sonar 2.0, or Sonar 2.0 XL.
Or, If you have them, click on the following
Options > Audio > Advanced. In the Advanced tab, look under the area of Playback and Recording, and click the box next the advanced option that says "Always Use MME Interface, Even When WDM Drivers Are Available"

A good decent MIDI keyboard (Yamaha) will run you about $250 to $300

If your in the market for a killer MIDI workstation keyboard then check out the Yamaha Motif line. I have the Motif 8 and it is a really hot piece of equipment. Be prepared for a 2000 - 3000 US$ pricetag though.

If you are simply looking for a MDI Contoller, then you can get away with a Roland for about $125.00(US). I would suggest checking with ebay, as there are usually tons of keyboards.

I used to use the Roland Virtual sound canvas on all my other computers...I too found that I couldnt install it on XP. so I would also be interested in a software synth that would work.
I did find that in sonar, working with my Soundblaster Audigy soundcard, you can get a basic idea of how sequences sound, but there's nothing like running your sounds through an external sound canvas.

I found the soundblaster ok if you play around with the soundfonts a bit! Ok ... not great but a very cheap and useable alternative. I have gigged in a duo using backing tracks this way ... noteably "Baker St" made using the "Music Man GM GS" soundfont and converted using "Cakewalk Sonar"

Roland makes some great modules if you want high end for $500 and above. You would also need midi interface.

Modules are crap, you can get all the sounds you want by buying a Sound Blaster card and using the soundfonts. The best GM soundfont I have heard is Fluid which is about 130Mb. Worth the download. I bought a keyboard for $90 and I can do everything I want on it...
