The only thing I have is a Starday compilation on vinyl with
that same single cut "Springfield Guitar Social". I misspelled his
name, no surprise, can't find the record, but I think Thumbs Carllile is
right. Tried that search, still nothing on Amazon. Sorry for
the mixup.Garth Hudson of The Band recorded him at some
point but that seems about as available as Hirth Martinez, another of the
Band's 'discoveries'. I seem to remember him being featured
a lot on one of the country variety shows during the '60s or maybe
even '70s. It looks like Roger Miller is in the background of the
photo at the previously supplied URL.

Thanks for the info. It's sad to me that you can turn the TV on any
time of day and see J-Lo shaking her booty but you can't find even one
CD of someone like Thumbs Carlisle...

There's a radio interview with him in Melbourne in 1955 where he plays
Getting sentimental over you and then explains the elements of his
style.
It's on Vol 2 of "The Greatest Guitarists you've never heard of"
(great series!) compiled by Australian veteran guitarist Bruce Clark:

Thumbs recounts how when he was asked in an interview
"You been playing like that all your life?"
he replied with an exasperated
"Not yet!"

Jack,

When I lived in Las Vegas (about 2 lifetimes ago, circa 1980) I became
friends
with a guy who played in a band w/ Thumbs' daughter. My friend Buzz had
hours of Thumbs on cassette recorded in clubs and motel rooms. I also
got
to hang out and jam with Thumbs when he came to town to visit. He was
one
of the most amazing musicians I've ever gotten to experience...

Next time you come to town to visit I'll find my Thumbs collection...
It'll
be fun to hear that stuff again!

Was Hirth Martinez a singer/songwriter/guitarist who played
semi-jazz/folk humorous songs? I vaguely recall hearing him
live once.

As jaz@jackzucker.com (Jack A. Zucker) so eloquently put:

Gemm is the sh'izzle, world wide searches for obscure stuff.

Thanks Chris! Too bad I don't have a turntable. Maybe I should buy one
just to be able to pick up obscure stuff like this and transfer it to
CD...

jack:

no cd's on thumbs yet, but here is a list of his LPs, in approximate order
of release:

roger miller presents thumbs carlille, smash 67074
all thumbs, smash 67085
life and times, frontline 7001, from 1978
guitar wizard, direct disk 110
jazz carlille style, direct disk 111
on his own, gemini 101
take one, hwp 1003 (duets with steel guitarist herby wallace)

he was dynamite at a very young age, beginning as the lead guitar player for
jimmy dickens band in nashville around 1950--this at a time when dickens was
renowned for having the hottest pickers in town and when nearly every
country record had some take-off guitar.

he spent a number of years in bill wimberly's western swing band out of
wichita in the mid and late 1950s. i think steel virtuouso curley chalker was
also in this band at the same time.

anyone who saw roger miller on tv in the 60s, certainly saw thumbs. i think
you can go rent a video of a "the big TNT show" 60s rock concert and see thumbs
behind roger on 4 songs. this is sometimes shown on AMC and also features
some vintage ike and tina t.

i heard a story of the count basie or ellington band coming through central
nevada on a bus in the 60s, and stopping in battle mountain for the night.
battle mountain was (and may still be) mostly whorehouses and bars, so the
bus emptied for some "sightseeing", only to run onto thumbs playing with an
otherwise non-descript band in some dive. major jaw dropping all around.

his recorded performances suffer from song selection, but there are some
gems, including great takes on "moonglow", "caravan", and "on the street
where you live"; all on smash.

not sure why he never had greater exposure--bad luck, vagabond nature, lack
of desire to be a star?? i wish i had gotten a chance to see him before he
passed away about 15 years ago.
