I'm a classical guy. I'll review from the perspective of one who likes
clean, uncolored recordings without much compression.

Any criticisms will try to focus on things that can be changed rather than
"I don't like that".

If I don't comment on your song, it's probably because I couldn't think of
any way to improve it.

The rest of you guys, jump in here. One voice doesn't make a good review.

I don't know, looks pretty good to me! Thanks for the reviews. Keep it up,
maybe you'll inspire me enough to send in my money.

There's no better audio investment. Just do it.

I'll be posting reviews of another disk soon. Sorta hoped I wouldn't be
the only one...

I know you said you would only comment on the stuff you were bothered by,
but how about reviewing the classical stuff? The reason we stopped sending
in a contribution after the second was that we got so little feedback.
(Well, being lazy was also a contributing factor.)

What's the matter with the rest of you? Since everyone has more than enough
opinions about politics, I would think you would have something to say about
music! Isn't it the thing you are most passionate about? (Barring the
occasional spouse, perhaps.)

Listening time, outside of listening when working.

This was only a review of disk 2. I did make mention of Karl's piano
recording and Benjamin Maas' orchestral recording. In fact, I'm more
likely to critique classical as that is my background.

Feel free to review my (classical) tracks on disk 1.

My submission was not classical and I haven't had a word of feedback. I
guess it must not suck, would anybody tell me if it sucks?

Well it's from 1988 and it sounds like a 80's demo recording.
Now I am ducking and running for cover... but You asked for it.
I absolutely hate the dry (gated ?) drums and the thin sounding
bass guitar and kickdrum.

If the folks here spent half as much time listening to RAP5 as they did
trading flames about politics and economics, they'd have worn out their CD
players by now.

Did people have any more time when RAP1 and RAP2 came out? I seem to
remember that their was more commentary on the music and less on politics
back then. Of course, I also remember walking barefoot through the snow to
school, uphill both ways, so maybe memory IS the first thing to go.

Hi Peter. Well at least you had something to say.

No gated drums but my effects processors back then were not the
greatest. Never thought of the bass as thin though, the sound was a
little fatter on tape.

Well, how is it that you ask whether people had more time for those distant
CD compilations, since they were before 9/11? We didn't do 3 for quite some
time after 9/11 although it was scheduled for during that time frame
(actually I think we started in November), and Scott's RAP LP is number 4.

The thing is that there's so much talent here, and yet, all of us are trying
to figure out a way to build within the new environment. Less groups have
the money for demos, less demos, less moving on to a CD project. I'm
constantly calling on my list of old clients to see if there's anything I
can do for them. My new clients seem to be ones that will stay, but if
one's not proactive then one isn't going to get the jobs, or it will take a
lot longer for them to decide. Lately I've been hitting some small local
venues on open mic night. Conversations have proven somewhat lucrative and
yet I'm not really chasing ambulances, I'm offering a real live person at a
gig, not an engineer on the phone.

I got a call yesterday from TV John Langworthy (gee, find out about him on a
google search), and I'd have to say I'm not inclined to participate but then
there's this stupid part of me that says, "I can do something about that".
He's either fricking whacko or he's a true seer. I tend to lean towards the
former.

He's on Soundclick.com with a search of John Langworthy, if anyone's
interested. It's so corny it's musical porn, but it's not really about that
at all.

Roland DEP-5.
I liked that one on a rock-guitar, it was so easy to turn the
knobs and get a useable sound.

Thin.
Compared to modern productions yes, compared to some of the old
stuff I did back then ehmmm.. No, not really :-)

Peter I am thinking about remaking the song. I still think it has a
pretty good groove. With all the newest toys and a kick-ass drum/room.
Same drummer, same singer/guitarist. With years of wisdom added. :)

Funny thing, I'm actually thinking about remaking some of the
old songs from the 80' - 90'
One song a quick demo-recording actually got played on some
local radio stations 30-40 times. ****ty sound but man what a
groove, and the B3 screaming along with the singer ahhh..
Sadly I don't think we can get that "nerve" recorded again.

Get somebody else's ear in there or you're likely to make the song the same.
I have to agree with Peter on the 80s era sound. Not the sound quality, the
sound the song presents. As far as the actual recording, I don't believe it
could hurt to have a go at a redo. I've slowly been doing the same thing
with my songs, which includes REAL Piano sounds from a Kurzweil, not a synth
(action, etc.), new mics, amps, guitars, bass to play with. And a
limitation on my voice I wasn't presented with the last time I did them.
They come out different songs, but the song generally comes out the same, if
that makes any sense. Meaning that they don't seem to lose any of what I
perceive as impact.

Well, since I've considered it, and Rob has considered it, and you have
considered it, and since I have John L. Rice somewhat at a session price per
song for drums, perhaps we could all trade some songs that maybe would use
our particular talents in instruments, vocal ability and such.

Or not.

Don't worry about it. I didn't get a word of feedback either. My track is
#18 on disc 2. I watched the reviews on disc 2 neatly bypass my track. I
don't know what it means, but I know my track didn't suck. Their mileage may
vary, but we'll never know....

Hmmmmmmm. Am I THAT incompetent? I see Disk 2 tracks 1-15 and 21.
Nothing in between. I'll listen and type at my first convenience.

Preview: Steve, your track didn't suck.

I repeat: My voice is but one. Anyone can do this. Many can do it much
better.

(delurk), hiya,

hmmmm, trck 18 initially caused a bit of allergic reactions on my
behalf; busy machines (drums/perc/key), excited about the lately
discovered ability to talk with each other, plus an excited mesa
boogie-hero, unable to behave, all of it reminiscent to a recording of
d.grusin in the dark 80s oberheim/linn-driven muzak era...errrrmmmm.
Upside is: Good tune, great trumpet solo, guitar solo (the official)
is ok, so why not cut the midi-shlubber away and replace it with
either a real artificial and _small_ sounding tr 808 groove (the
british mode, that is) or a very much calmed down real drums/bass,
with nothing but one snare hit at every last 4 following each
completed vocals text line. Explained a bit fuzzy, i know..

to be understood as humble individual opinion, don't get it wrong,
pleeez.

i utterly enjoy rap and all of the work in rap5th

LOL! Dude, there's actually no midi on that particular track. Those are
real drums, real percussion, and real electric piano, played by real people.
The percussion track was a timbale thingy created and added by the drummer.
Trumpeter - Kevin Turcotte - kicks ass, doesn't he? There's a jazz album I
did with him, called Catwalk, still available...
