Staccato drums?

Here is an interesting auction. I'm not exactly sure why people are bidding
on this though after reading the first line of the description. hehe

The bass drum looks like a pair of lacquered mens underwear. ;-)

Anyone ever hear a set of these? From the description they have been around
a while. I guess their fibreglass?

Yeah, except they were around 20 years before Photoshop, Mr. en|ckma.

They were similar to North drums; so, an 8 inch tom sounds more like a
12......the bass drums moved a lot of air. Not much in the way of resonance,
but you never heard a more powerful attack! When I say 'resonance' I'm
referring to what we consider to be good sounding today....I'm not referring
to sustain, of which these drums had extra. (like the north's) It was like
sitting in front of subs....very low in pitch, and very much trying to push
your body out the way.

Here's what the 'The Drum Book' by Geoff Nichols has to say about
Staccato Drums:

"Staccato appeared in 1977 and carried on to around 1984. They were
amazing looking fibreglass drums designed by Pat Townsend, who says the
idea came from a tree he once painted. The bass drum flares out in a
double 'trouser leg' shape, the fisrt asymmetrical drum ever patented.
They were fitted with Hayman circular lugs and were the British
equivalent of North drums, although North had a simpler 'Apline Horn' shape.

"The drums were loud and eye-catching and many of the great names
of British rock - Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham and Simon
Phillips - gave them a work out. The visual aspect of Staccato has
appealed to many, including Malcolm Maclaren's punk band Bow Wow Wow,
who featured them on TV.

"Unfortunately, the history of Staccato is as convoluted as the
drums, involving various names on the British drum scene. Drummer Chris
Slade (who started out with Tom Jones and went on to Manfred Mann's
Earthband and Uriah Heep) manufactured them in the early 1980's; Nico
McBrain was involved at one stage; and Pat Townsend recently said he was
going to manufacture new Staccato drums using lighter carbon fibre. In
recent years Staccato have been manufactured by the Canadian company
Ayotte."

The E-Bay seller has not identified himself as Pat Townsend though.

He did mention that he makes drums cases, and his email is Nomad. And
Nomad cases is in Niagara Falls... I bought some cases from the guy a
few years back, really nice fella. I don't remember his name tho.

I haven't played Staccatos but I have played a set of North drums. I
liked them, but not ehough to deal with buying and transporting a set.

Why? Have you ever heard these or the (simmilar) North drums?
I haven't either, but I would be curious to know how they do sound.

There is no rule that a drum has to be made of wood or brass,
that the shell needs to be cylindric,
and that drummers and drum manufacturers must stick to traditions.

From your description I would not expect too much.
Nor from the design. But however, I would give it a try.

If I knew that nobody likes this yellow monster on the mooon,
I would post the picture to alt.binaries.pictures.tasteless ;-)
