My niece wants a portable CD player (Sony preferred) for her upcoming
birthday that handles CD-RWs. She says her current CD player (a few
years old) doesn't handle them.

We talked about CD player compatibility during RMMG CD time. I'm
thinking it's not a simply as just buying Sony CD player model XYZ-
123--that record speeds and that sort of stuff get involved.

Help. :)

Most new ones do play CDR and CDRW and many also play MP3's.

It will usually say on the package. Or if you find a model # you can
look online for specs.

On the other hand... the $350 Sony DVD player I bought a few years ago
does not.... &#$%#R#!!!

If she's dead set on a CD player, great, but you might wanna ask about MP3
players.....Hold a lot of tunes (some, anyways) are teensy-weensy
(unobtrusive, for you more erudite folks) and, if she's gonna be walking
around, no skips, and no fumbling around with discs...Just a thought..Sure,
they're not audiophile quality in terms of playback, but is a teen-ager
*really* gonna care? Probably not...;+)

I just bought a halfway decent portable CD / CDR / CDRW / MP3 CD
player from K-Mart for $20. Seems they are having a clearance sale.
Whether this sale is a directive from management for all K-Mart stores
or just the one in my area I cannot know. You might want to check it
out, a lot of electronics were at fire sale prices.

I went in there to get some replacement filters, and came out with a
nifty MP3 player for $20. Original price was $49 or something like
that. Steer clear of Magnavox CD MP3 players (the one I had chopped
the first 1/2 seconf off every MP3 and I had to return it) and
Durabrand CD MP3 players (a total waste of money, cuts out at random,
so I returned it).

The one I got was a four line display Oritron, and it works great.
Hard to beat for $20... But they had about 8 others.

Couldn't hurt to stop in to the local K-Mart to check.

now you are really screwed

I have the Panasonic SL-MP70, which cost about $50, and plays CD-RWs,
and decodes MP3 as well. Nice buffer; I've had it crash into the
dashboard and land on the floor in an emergency stop, didn't miss a
byte. It burns batteries faster with CD-RWs (as opposed to CD-R),
though, according to the manual. I'm pretty sure I get about 12 or more
hours of CD-RW reading (MP3) with two NiMH AA batteries.
