Tonight (8/13) at B.B. Kings in NYC - Galactic is the headliner
(featuring Stanton Moore on drums), with Bonerama opening the show,
and then Bonerama does two nights at Tobacco Road Thursday and Friday.
I assume you've heard of Galactic by now (for the uninformed, they
are a pretty good band with a modern take on the Meters' sound).
Bonerama is awesome - five trombones, tuba, guitar and drums playing
in a funk/brass band style. Russell Batiste is the drummer on their
CD, but I don't know if he's touring with them. No matter who the
drummer is, they will be funky! Fans of the New Orleans sound should
check this out.

Saw Galactic last weekend, opening for Jeff Beck/Bozzio and BB King.
They were great. The baritone player was fun. Stanton was very
impressive. Used the hell outta that 4 pc set. Could have been the
pressure of knowing Bozzio was next up. We both preferred Galactic to
B/B. They played a lotta notes. A lot of notes does not always
correlate to a lot of music. Basically a guitar solo over a drum solo,
with a muddy keyboard for bottom. Quite a waste of talent.........
I know it's a cliche, but B.B. King played more in a few notes, then
Beck did all night. Bill D.

I ended up catching Bonerama's Friday show after the blackout ended.
****ING FUNKY!!! Kevin O'Day was the drummer. He is one of New
Orleans' best kept secrets and he was nastier than ever Friday night.
This is one of many New Orleans drummers who could be mentioned in the
thread about great snare/kick/hi-hat players. The disciples of
Zigaboo Modeliste and Johnny Vidacovich are masters of this. Anyway,
unfortunately the show was not well-attended for obvious reasons, but
they still ripped it up. The set was about 50% originals. Cover
tunes included Frankenstein, Moby Dick, Lil' Darlin, and the Meters'
Funky Miracle. If Bonerama tours through your town, check them out.
You won't regret it.
