hey all,

hope all has been well here; i've been gigging and recording almost every
single day this past week, so i've been absent. noticably, hopefully. :-)

so, i got the behringer mx802a board today, and get this: an instruction
manual in every language EXCEPT english!

so, the baptism by fire begins. :-)

I have to agree -- I used to be a total Behringer-phobe, but I needed a
cheap headphone amp so I just got a HA4700 4-channel for my studio. I am
very, VERY pleasantly surprised by this thing!

The aux insert on each channel totally kicks ass, and the sound quality is
great.

And the PRICE! DAMN!!!

This has me thinking much more seriously about Behringer stuff. For those
of you home studio guys (or gals) here, this is the next thing I'm VERY
eagerly anticipating:

An 8 channel A/D and D/A mic pre with ADAT interface for $250??? Holy
Sh!t!!! The closest thing I know of to this now is a Presonus or a
Focusrite for about seven bills!

You get what you pay for with this Behringer stuff. I went with an
Allen and Heath mixer. Great sound and a reliable power supply.

I'm leaning towards the HA8000 with 8 channels, but both the 4700 and 8000
have their uses, and they are quite reasonable.

Other good for the money B-gear: the comps are much better than the Alesis,a
nd the multigate isn't bad either. The digital mixer is down to a grand, and
that's pretty sweet. The little bass amps are a definite bargain and the PA
power amps, and powered PA for that matter, are good deals.

For bottom feeders like myself, Behringeroffers lots of choices. And since I
still get deals at my local shop, it's even a better deal.

I'm looking at the A&H stuff, too, tho. What model did you get? I
was looking and the MixW 16:2, I love seeing direct outs and inserts
on every channel but there's no groups. Us drummers need groups on a
mixer, damnit! ;-)

bah! if you're looking for top-o-the-line studio quality mixer then sure,
go with A&H. otherwise, I think that's a waste of plenty of money that
could have been used on other stuff.

I mean, it's like buying a $75 monster cable to attach your headphones to
your walkman! :-)

That's the one. Very nice and quiet board. I was leaning on getting
a Behringer but, at the time they had issues. Perhaps they have been
ironed out by now. You do seem to get a lot of features with the
Behringer stuff especially for the price. I always wondered where
they were cutting corners.

The GL 2200 has them but, I can imagine it is expensive.

The A&H has 6 auxes; two pre, two post and two switchable for monitor mixes.
What would you use groups for? A similar priced mixer that has groups is the
Soundcraft FX-16.

I did see the 6 auxes, but with two outboard effects, two monitor
mixes, that really only leaves me one stereo group or two mono's
(depending on whether I'm live (mono) or recording (stereo)).

I like to group the toms to L/R and the Overheads+cymbals to a
seperate L/R when I record in my home "studio". It's also nice to
group a horn section and vocal harmonies so I can adjust without
losing my "mix".

Does anyone have any recommended sources for either mixer? This is
starting to be off-topic a little, so I may take it over to the sound
groups...

The FX-16 has two groups but only 4 auxes.

I looked at both these mixers and the best prices I found were at
www.fullcompass.com. You might want to look at the Soundcraft Spirit
LX-7-16. It's closer to $1300, but it looks like it will take care of your
needs.

A used Yamaha 01-V with an extra output card may fit the bill, too.

Another option would be the MixWizard 14:4:2. It has six auxes, four groups
and both stereo and mono main outs with inserts on all groups and the stereo
mains. It only has 10 mono xlr ins, though.

I currently use a Mackie 1604 VLZ-Pro (16 XLR pre's) going into a
Fostex 16-track VF16 hard-disk recorder. I use the 1604 for both
recording and live. If I do get a new mixer (A&H, etc) I'd use it
for recording and only use my 1604 on the road. I really want to
upgrade my pre's for recording, since the Mackie pre's are less than
wonderful.

I'll probably also go used, since my budget is just "hobby-level".
But I won't be selling any drumsets to get this - the wife is just
going to have to understand that the toy-pile is going to have to grow
sometimes. ;-)

Hmmm. The mic pres on the Mackie garner at least 'decent' status on the
audio groups, except when paired with SM-57s and the like. It's the EQ and
bus summing that no-one likes. If you're using a single mixer for live and
recording now, why not sell the Mackie and buy one really nice multipurpose
board and some outboard mic pres? How many mics do you use on drums live? In
the studio? How many tracks do you record at once?
