I'm trying to get SONAR XL, Protools Mbox, Roland VSC on my new computer
[pentium 4] to work together so that I can record midi and audio. I have a
Roland midi keyboard controller [pc300] and a roland MC80 midi file player.
I also have an on-board sound card which I'm told I should disable.What I
need is a step by step guide on how to do this.

The sales people and the device manufacturers have not been very helpful.

Thanks for any advice.

best advice is to go to something like "alt.cubase" or "alt.sonar" for
detailed FAQs on how to set these puppies up.

laurence payne, dp and those sort of guys really know their onions.

a step by step guide on disabling the sound card? If that's your question I
can help. The other stuff I can't help with.

1. see if you can disable your sound card in bios
2. if not there should be an onboard jumper to disable sound. You may need
a motherboard/jumper diagram to see which one it is if you're unfamiliar
with it.

i think that the onboard sounds(VIA97 etc) can be disabled in BIOS(as you
pointed out) or in the system/device manager page.

They never are helpful once you have handed over the dosh. try asking at
alt.music.midi newsgroup.

If you disable the souncard, you will not be able to use the WDM dirvers for
the VSC or any other DXi synth. The problem is with the MBox, it is not
likely compatible with Sonar.
We tested Sonar and quite frankly for external audio and midi input it
sucks.
Nevertheless, try this first. Remove Sonar completely from your PC. Make
sure you have the MBox on and selected as the default audio source in
Control Panel, then let Sonar try to find it on Install.
But frankly, if you have Pro Tools, all you need Sonar for is the VSC DXi
synth.
To get it to work, you need to load your midi file or enable and arm one
midi track for recording. Then open an audio track. Goto the FX tab in
the audio track and the pull down menu will give you a choice of DXi synths.
Select the VSC.
Go back to your midi tracks and put their outputs to the VSC.
Then if and when you export you must enable the outputs first to the VSC and
then export to wav.
The instructions in the XL package take you step by step.
That is all I use Sonar for. For most midi I use Powertracks and for audio
use Cool Edite Pro.
If you have Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and it sees your MBox, use it for audio.

Thanks all for advice [see post below],

This is where I've got to-
I've been able to disable the on board sound card but, in sounds and audio
devices within Control panel there is no mbox. I've reinstalled the
software
a number of times. [ I presume the software relates to protools and mbox as
a sound card.

I can open protools and it will play audio but no other sound things work,
like for instance my CD drive. When I open media player I get a message
back saying there is no audio device.

I note that a plug in version of VST Instruments and DXi comes with the VSC.
Does this mean there is no real advantage in me having SONAR as well as
protools
to record midi and audio?

Anymore help would be appreciated.

The VSC DXi in Sonar requires the WDN Drivers for a soundcard that uses them
and you just disabled them. The problem is the MBox, not the soundcard. It
is likely not fully XP compatible.

Does the DXi that came with the Edirol VSC Multipack [not Sonar] also
require the WDN drivers?
