TiMidity++ is great, but as you said it is not very well documented. I
have devoted a web-site to TiMidity++ to help with this problem. Here
you can get a simple installation that uses soundfonts, links to other
high quality free soundfonts, installation help files, and a Q&A Forum
that I host. Try it, you will like it!
