Everybody along the Hudson OK? I lost power at the shop and at home for most
of the late afternoon and most of the evening. We basically took the
anti-survivalist route and toughed it out at a restaurant and movie theatre
in a nearby area that had power :-).

The latest in the blame game is that somewhere on Lake Erie in OH this all
started. I was only out of power for 10 minutes here in Waterville (near
Toledo). My friend up in Ann Arbor wasn't so lucky, he got stuck in an
elevator and had to climb his 280# ass up 4 flights on a service ladder!

Hear in Kingston, Ontario my power was out from 4:15pm to 11:30pm. Not too
bad. Ontario was hit hard with every where in Ontario except for like 1 or
2 towns were without power and still are. They say some places might not
get power for another day or two.

We have a water boil advisory, we can't shower, flush our toilets, and can't
use major appliances. We are to expect more outages today as the crews work
very hard to restore the grid. Speaking of grid right now it's very
unstable and weak in this part of the hemisphere,

Luckily I was already home. Not so lucky was I was working on a local
band's demo. I hadn't saved some of the work I did to it so it's all raw
again and I have to start all that work over again. Fun times...NOT

What sort of skins do you need to record drums? I understand there
are some with microphones built in, but how do these work?
Oh? I was told I had to buy recording heads for the drums - Lister

Didn't touch us down here in Cincy, but the wife had to go in really early
to handle the Cleveland lab.

Here in Newtown, CT we lost power 4-ish in the afternoon, and it has
not been restored yet. Unfortunately, power was never lost at my
office (about a half-hour away from home), so here I am. yipee!

Lost power here in Rochester NY @ 4:15. Back on @ 11:30.
It was fun though: Had a bar-b-que, then got my ass whomped in checkers by
my 6 year old daughter. Ahhh, family time...
Got home early today from work (Xerox). Lots of power spiking and controlled
outages took our servers down for what could be the rest of the day.

We were lucky here in Rockland County (NY) as the power went out at 4:14 and
come back at 7:30ish.

Boy, I'm happy I don't live in the city anymore!

Talked to my parents in Henrietta this morn and they're back too.

So how are things at Raaachester :-)

Did they catch the robbers that shoot someone in Webster?

Where abouts in Rah-cha-cha are you? I checked out your webpage and
it looks VERY interesting. I don't have any edges to be done right
now, but do you do refinishing or lacquer finish repairs too? We
gotta hook up some time, I think I knew a Steve Nelson from
Irondequoit HS that had a cute little sister. That's not you, is it?
;-)

Let me know if you're playing out anywhere, even add me to your
mailing list. My band's real part-time, but we usually hit places
like the Brewhouse, Milestones, Karma, Millenium, etc.

Power is up and running in *most* towns, here, near the
Westchester/Putnam border. I was in-between students in Poughkeepsie at 4:15
when the power went out. I even gave my 4:30 lesson by sunlight in the
showroom of the music store. We then learned the power outage was one of
large scale and closed the store.
I headed home to grab some beers from the fridge before they got warm and
went to a friend's house to hang by the pool. Seems a lot of other people
had the same idea... And that's how Blackout Party 2003 came to be.
Unfortunately, I don't think the commuters in NYC were having blackout
parties. Being in a subway car WITH power can be uncomfortable. I couldn't
imagine getting stuck inside one during a blackout!

Dealt lemons, made lemonade,

They haven't caught the shooter yet. I'm not sure they will, as the person
had a good deal of time to get away before there was any response. I was in
the building next door to the credit union, where it happened. Basically,
when they announced a sitewide emergency on the PA, I stood up from my cube,
looked out the window, saw State Troopers, SWAT, dogs, Federal B. I., etc...
swarming all over the credit union. Then we all got locked in our buildings
for the next 11 hrs. It's been a long week...

Hi,
I'm about 30 minutes south, down in the Finger Lakes region.

I do ply wrap recovering, domestic/exotic veneer finishes (should have some
snares in a few weeks), bearing edge repair, complete kit builds, custom
snares (surprise!), etc...
As far as lacquer repairs, it really depends on the nature of the injury,
and the type of finish you currently have. I'm sure I could handle a
complete kit strip-down and re-lacquering.
The website needs lots of attention. Stay tuned for pricing, color/finish
samples, payment options, and a pix gallery. Between summertime busy-ness
and equipping the shop, the website kind of got put on the back burner.

Nope, no little sister. Didn't go to Irondequoit High. Not me! :^)

We just started playing again, after having taken all of the last 12 months
off, due to my back injury (Ruptured/fragmented L4 disc that warranted
lumbar laminectomy surgery). We played the Park Ave Fest a few weeks ago
with a great Rochester born, NYC-based singer/songwriter named Dee Adams
(www.deeadams.com), as her regular band couldn't be in town. Big fun.
If you hit our band's website (www.bluejimmy.com) and go to the "Community"
link, you can sign up for our opt-in emailings. Showdates, band news,
recipes, etc...

Anyhoo, to drag this one back on-topic, hopefully everyone will have the
juice pretty soon. Time for the U.S./Canada to upgrade their power grids! I
heard somewhere that in general, the equipment it runs on is WWI vintage?

Not me. No power out here, but I'm ready. Gas mask and assault
weapon loaded and ready to go right by the door. Anybody
coming for my flashlite batteries GETS IT! :-)

Excuse me, but what the hell has happened to the America
I grew up in? The power goes off for a while and it totally
takes over the news for the evening on all channels? It's
called a "disaster" and a "crisis"? GIMME A BREAK HERE!
A while back a storm blew down my wires and because
I honestly told the power company that they dangling up
high and there was no danger they took a WEEK to fix them!
Last time I do that. Gosh, And I don't need to talk to any
psychologist to "help" me "through" it either!

It's the freaking POWER going off! If you aren't prepared to
make your own, then figure that you'll have to actually
sit there without "Friends" and "CSI" on the tube!
It might do you some good to meditate on how to be ready
for power outages in the future. How about a little
battery TV with a solar cell like I've got? Hmmm?

The talking heads on TV all go around trying to make a
huge emotional issue out of any minor thing. Cripes.
It RAINS and they have interviews with people blubbering
about "horrible strange tiny pieces of water falling from
the sky". Who ever saw THAT before? Scarey! When the weather
service says it might rain, all the local TV stations
take over the screen with giant "warnings" and "alerts"! For
freaking RAIN! Of course they never cover up paying commericals
with "alerts". And the power outage. New Yorkers ACTUALLY
being forced to use their FEET and walk!!! Who'd a thunk it?

I know it chokes me up. Oh The HUMANITY!!! All those
poor people totally helpless without their Internet
service! (sobs) I can't go on....

Someone please bring me a barf bag!

A battery powered UPS is your friend in need. Even a small one will keep the
system up long enough to save everything and do an orderly shutdown. If you
use a laptop you can run for days off a UPS.

I was in Rockland too at the time - power came back on in Orangeburg
around 8:30pm Thursday night. I had to head in to work at WNYC radio
the next morning at 5am. We were moved into Sirius Satellite Radio's
studios on 49th St. because our studios downtown were dead, and Sirius
had generators. Full power came back to Sirius around 6:30am Friday.
We didn't get the juice back downtown until 9:41 Friday night, right
at the end. I'm back at work now (Sunday 10am) and the
troubleshooting continues...

And speaking of the Blackout, I hear that it actually started
somewhere in Ohio. Well THAT figures! We can't even hire someone
who can deliver a freakin' package these days let alone

If you saw the massive number of people walking, and the people lined up
waiting for the power to come back on for the gas pumps, you might change
your tune.

I was there.

New Yorkers amazed me with their stength and stability. Why don't you try
walking from Wall Street to Queens or Brooklyn or Long Island after putting
in an eighth hour day.

Hey, I live at 5000' in a state where people climb 14,000' mountains, camp
in the snow, and sleep on the side of 2000' cliffs for fun. You won't
impress anyone here with _walking_.

Oh... sob... the horror! Those poor yuppies.

OMG Dan. I'm not sure whether to laugh or just shake my head. Out here in
the far burbs, Farmer Bob walks farther from his tractor to the house just
for lunch, after putting in 7 house BEFORE lunch. Then he walks back out to
do at least another 7 after lunch.

One of the difference is that Farmer John was prepared to do some walking
and wore the appropriate attire, specifically footwear. Do you think Farmer
John or Mrs. John would walk that in dress shoes? Talk them off an walk
barefoot or in nylons? Not a good comparison.

True enough. I also didn't consider that our poor yuppies, in addition to
being unprepared in the area of footwear, are also likely extremely out of
shape for lack of any physical activity more strenuous than hoisting their
cell phone to their ear.

Sorry man... this farmer John puts in an 8 hour yuppie day (which involves a
great deal of walking I suppose), then comes home and changes his shoes
(just like Mr. Rogers!) and puts in a good night of Farmer John duties. ...
and then play drums for a couple of hours.

Lets see if it's on the board.... BZZZZZZZZ... wrong answer. Still no pity
for yuppies taking a stroll.

I think to classify all who had to walk for miles and miles as "yuppies" is
pretty shortsighted. Many of these folks are yuppies, thats for certain.
Many are unhealthy, disabled, pregnant, etc. I understand and sympathize
with those caught off guard who are not fit and were not prepared at all for
this. I come home from my yuppie job and go for long walks...at my
convenience. If I were to get notified at work tomorrow that I had to walk
ten miles home with no preperation, I would be moaning about it.

Why? You think they have a lot of blue collar workers & farmers working in

Unhealthy (unfit)? For sure.
Disabled... I can sympathize with that.
Pregnant? No sympathy on that one either... it is a voluntary (and foolish)
condition. (Thankfully my dear mother would disagree with me on the
"foolish" part).

Being unprepared is a choice. **** happens. That's life. You have to be
willing to explore options. If it is just a matter of shoes and socks, what
would it take to stop and buy a cheap pair of each? If walking was totally
out of the question, one could (quickly, off the top of my head); Stay where
you are. Stay at a nearby hotel. Buy a bicycle. Pay someone on a motorcycle
to give you a ride.

By choice, of course.

What about the hundreds of thousands of people who commute from between
25 to 100 miles to NYC everyday? People from Upstate New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut and even Pennsylvania... Our own Mo Roberts had to walk from
Lower Manhattan to Westchester County. That ain't no casual stroll, my
friend. It's more like a marathon - or two marathons, if you live near me.

I think you'd be singing a different tune if your wife or daughter were
stuck in an elevator, or on a subway (ever been in a subway station on a 95
degree day? - not to mention stuck BETWEEN them in a pitch black, rat
infested subway tunnel?). Of course, you'd have no way of contacting her (or
she, you), and she'd have no way of getting home to the burbs, even when she
finally got out. Cell phones and many landlines useless, hotels full, stores
and restaurants closed, no available public transportation, gas stations
useless... I think you can see where I'm going here.

I agree that the media sensationalized the **** out of the whole thing
and we're ALL sick of hearing about it, but your trivialization of the
largest blackout in the history of the North America shows your ignorance of
the situation. And the "Farmer John" comparison is flat-out ridiculous...
It's very easy to heckle from the sidelines.

Uh, Joe. The lights went out... for a few hours. It was a little warm out
and people had to walk. Dealing with adversity is a part of life. Taking a
little stroll on a summer day hardly qualifies as adversity. Inconvenience,
yes. Adversity, no.

I don't think I sing well, so I'll stick to my same tune. Hundred of
thousands of people were *inconvenienced* for a day. Has my family ever been
inconvenienced? Sure. Do I think it's worth days of whining? No.

JOhn- I do not live there. I have not whined. I have taken exception to YOUR
whining about the people there and what happened that day. You generalize,
you have simple solutions(get a room, stop and buy shoes). You make these
statements in hopes of getting a rise out of those who had the misfortune of
experiencing this. That is your motivation...and that is trolling.

-MIKE-
08-19-2003, 12:34 AM
I think both sides are showing some overreaction and a little lack
of understanding. One one hand, yes I would very worried about a
wife or daughter getting home, with no way to contact them and no
way to go get them (I saw the traffic). Most women would have
bloody feet having to walk that far in dress shoes. Many men would
be dehydrated and shaking after 10 miles of walking.

And yes, the media blew it way out of proportion. The took a very
important story and tried to turn it into a catastrophe. They were
reckless and irresponsible. The story, the truth of the story, was
important enough to garner the coverage it got. They didn't have to
play it up the way they did and elude to terrorism every five
minutes.

What impresses me the most is something that I don't think would've
gone the same, before 9-11. They way people were so calm. There
was no wide spread looting, no mass panic and rioting. I'm sure
there were isolated incidents which we'll hear about in three months
on Dateline NBC. But all in all, I think anyone with a hankering
to cause trouble, knew that this *new* New York City would've have
raised up and kicked their asses, had they started anything. It was
great to hear about people pulling together and helping each other,
instead of being selfish. That's impressive and something to be
proud of.

What doesn't impress me is how people are complaining about what a
hardship it was. I have to agree it was a major inconvenience. It
certainly ranks a ten on the pain in the ass scale. But sorry,
spend a week in a third world country-- see what those people have
to go through every single day of their lives, to simply survive--
and you'll be happy to go through what you did, a few times a year.
They got a very tiny taste of what it's like for millions and
millions people who live without transportation, electricity,
sanitation or plumbing, clean water, or any shoes at all. Oh yeah,
and food.

Come on Dan. New Yorkers actually having to walk! Yeah that is a REAL
emergency! And people had run their cars so low on gas that they
didn't have enough to get home? How many could that have been. If it
was more than a few that ALSO says something about people needing a
lesson in how America *used* be about self-reliance and not gummint
handouts and Big Brother being there to "save" you.

> I was there.

Good. Did the exercise do you some good? My mom who is over 80
had no power either, but as an old farm girl, it was no big deal.
Has our country come to this? We have to tell ourselves that loss
of power is an "emergency" so we can feel proud of how well we can
cope? This is sad.

> New Yorkers amazed me with their stength and stability. Why don't you try

Puleeze. They "amazed" you because they could deal with a power outage
and after having practiced twice before, at that! Is this how soft
we've all become? Hey I walk all over the damn place and think
nothing of it. I ride my bike every day and I'm an old geezer!
And an "eighth hour" is probably exactly how much "true" work
some of those people are putting in.

I knew I'd get slammed for being "insensitive" but I'm sorry,
I'm a totally unrepentant sinner.

As for you Dan, Turn of your TV. (And while you are at it shut
off the cable and rip down that satellite dish) put on some
nice comfortable shoes and take a nice long walk. And while
you are out doing that, use your brain a bit to think instead
of letting the TV do it for you. It will strengthen your legs
and improve your double pedal licks.

Once YOU've walked from manhattan to northern new jersey or western
connecticut, then I'll listen to what you're saying. Until then, forget it.

I'm in fine shape. I ran a half marathon two weekends ago. I'm sure carrying
all of my brother's worldly possessions down the pitch black stairs was
rough on my dad. I'm not complaining. I was fine. But I do have compassion
for all those people I saw streaming across the bridges without any idea how
they were getting home to an outer borough, town, or even a different state.
I have compassion for those who were trapped in packed rush hour elevators.
I have compassion for those who were trapped in the trains we saw stopped
along the tracks and the ones we heard about trapped in the tunnels. Maybe
these are everyday occurences for you, but I guess I'm just not interested
in living in your world. From what I saw, there was no looting, no violence.
The city pulled together in a calm, organized fashion, and I'm proud of New
Yorkers for their strength and stability. If you're not, then so be it. I
didn't grow up on a farm, and I'm proud that my parents and grandparents
worked hard so I didn't have to.

Rough? I'm sure it was. But was it really _that_ bad? It was just one day in
a long life.

Yep, that sure would suck. I'd hate for it to happen to me. Miserable as
hell, sure. But not a life-changing tragedy.

I'm glad there was no violence and that all y'all feel good about
yourselves. It's hard to impress us Westerners though; out here we got folks
that will cut their own arms off with a leatherman tool, bandage the stump
and walk miles for help.

When we'd do practice landings at Camp Lejeune, NC. After the final landing,
rather than coming back aboard ship for a ride back to the base, the Marines
would walk back from the landing site. ... carrying all their gear .... 36
miles .... in combat boots.

When I was in Beirut, we'd *run* six miles from our camp on the beach,
around the airport, to go get breakfast.

.... and no one in NY *had* to walk anywhere.

Charleston, South Carolina, is the center of the world "where the Ashley and
Cooper rivers meet to form the Atlantic Ocean." And on a funny note, the
year that The Citadel beat Army in football, the Charleston Post and Courier
ran a quote from the commandant (Gen. Mark Clark) as a banner:

"THE GREATEST WIN SINCE OUR BOYS FIRED ON FORT SUMTER!"

Now this is more like it! I NEVER said that I wasn't proud of
New Yorkers pulling together, getting each other out of stuck
elevators and subways in a friendly, organized and most
*un-New Yorker* (hard evidence being found in previous outages)
fashion. Yep. That was great!

However, to hype a simple power outage into a huge imaginary
"disaster" and "crisis" and get all bleary-eyed over it to
