View Full Version : UPS or FED EX or USPS for heavy hardware case?

Hey-
I'm receiving shipment on that big sonor delite kit and the seller is trying to
work out shipping. UPS shipping quotes $293.59 for the whole kit, hardware and
cymbals, even if dropped off at UPS location (not UPS store). The hardware
case alone was $82.76!
So, I started to tally up Fed Ex Home Delivery, and it was about 35-40 percent
less, but they won't ship a box that is more than 70 lbs (the hardware case is
108 lbs, but in a trap case on wheels).
Any ideas?
thanks.

Tell him to hacksaw off about 30% of the metal, and remove half the lugs and
rims. The tell him to wood rasp the shells to half their thickness. That
should help.

From where to where? I've sent stuff on a bus before when it's
direct, they'll take just about anything size/weight-wise. It cost me
about $50 to ship a big-ass subwoofer from Buffalo to NYC (3'x4'x4'
120#).

as always, quick to insult but slow to offer any help.
regarding your price periscope... is the seller using Mailboxes, Etc? I'm
sure you know by now that you should check for that. because that price is
pretty steep. so either it includes some really nice, heavy-duty road
cases or he's getting gouged for packaging and is shifting the cost onto
you.
either way, I would go with UPS for the hardware case, but FedEx for the
drums; since you said that FedEx was cheaper overall, but won't ship the
hardware case.

Split the hardware up into a few smaller/lighter boxes.

Lighten up Francis, wasn't mean as an insult at all, simply a comment.
I've shipped a lot of amps, heavy stuff, and that price quote is outrageous.
<is the seller using Mailboxes, Etc?>
If he is, that explains it. Never use MBE.
UPS won't take anything over 70 lbs. He may need to split the hardware up in
different boxes.

Ship the case via UPS and then go Fed Ex Ground on the rest. I have had wonderful
luck with Fed Ex Ground.

For some reason, FedEx Ground imposes some ridiculous surcharge to
deliver to residential addresses in my area. It nearly doubles the cost of
shipping. Luckily, I can have packages shipped to the music store where I
teach and, thereby, avoid the surcharge.

it's correct. I entered the dimensions and weight myself. 7 piece with full
