View Full Version : deafening noise in the first second

Hello,
Can anyone help me please? I want to put midi files on the website of a
choir for the choir members to practise their parts.
I made the files in a music notation programme and saved them as midi files.
On playback some of them sounded OK but some of them started with a really
deafening noise. What did I do wrong?

If you told us where to find the files, or even shared which program
you made them in, it might be possible to help .

Otherwise, we can only make wild guesses :-)

Yes, you're right.
I made the files in Finale.
And the place you can find them is:
http://home.hccnet.nl/dvisser.1/oefenmateriaal.htm
A bit down the page you see all the numbers of Händel's Messiah
An example is: number 20. The soprano part (S)

Plays OK on my machine. What exactly goes wrong for you?

I play the file with the quick time player. perhaps there's something wrong
with it, or with the way my computer handles the playback. When I start the
file without turning back the volume first I almost get eardamage. I don't
know the English word for it. A kind of shreek (is that a word?)
Some of the midifiles I downloaded in the past had the same thing. I thought
the problem was in the files.
And that there was now the same phenomenon in my files, I thought it was
because I don't know a thing about midi, and that I had forgotten something.
Glad to know you could play the file OK.
Have you ever heard that people had this problem while playing midi files?

I looked at the file and you have a program change first and then at
the same time you play the first chord. Try redo it but wait 1 bar
then begin play your part.

I insert one empty bar at the beginning of all my files, is it that simple?
I'll try, thank you Peter

And thank you Laurence

Tried it in the QT player - still OK!

I've got two of your files here. Soprano parts to 03 and to 20.
Can you confirm that 20 has the problem, 03 doesn't?

Someone suggested the program change coinciding with a note on beat 1
could be the problem. All your files have this. I f this caused any
problem, I would expect it to be a missing first note, not a shreik.
(Ever done Walton's 'Belshazzar's Feast'? Perhaps you could use it :-)

Give it a try. But note that all your files are constructed the same
way, and only some of them shriek.

I get more and more confused.
Files 03 seem to be OK all the time. But the next ones aren't. But when I
play them a second time, the noise sometimes has disappeared.
so..............???

OK
Go to:
http://mysite.freeserve.com/LP1
and try the file X20, a slightly modified version of your 20 soprano
file. Can you make this one misbehave?

It's great. Thank you!

I have to go and visit family right now. I'll try later on and let you know.

I decided to leave the family be for a few minutes and have a look (have a
hear) first. Sounds great. What did you do with the file?

Opened it in Cubase, added a blank bar at the front, shifted the
program change commands to the front, now a bay before the first note.

Probably much the same result as inserting a blank preliminary bar in
Finale :-)

Has anyone except you managed to reproduce the problem? Does it
happen if you play the midis in Windows Media Player?

With software players it seems to occur sometimes that the song starts
quicker than the sound can be loaded or initialized and then the missing
sound comes bit too late (and will probably quicker played than should)
as a bad noise and following notes are played correctly and in time.

I think a bar at beginning helped to give the player enough time to
initialize the software made (or loaded) sounds before using them on
first notes.
