midi / software-wavetable

I have a midi, and I've heard the midi earlier on an older computer, and
that sounded great. But now, on my new computer, it seams my sound-card has
no wave-table(?) so the midi sounds very bad.
I cannot invest in hardwarethe, computer is as it is, no upgrades possible
(work) , is there a way to use some software to simulate a wavetable?
Or maybe convert the MIDI file to MP3 of WAVE, using the appropiate
wavesounds?

Besides Yamaha's software synth, which is very good, Roland makes a
good one (VSC, www.edirol.com, but www.pgmusic.com offers it bundled
with other programs for free, so if you happen to need one of their
programs -- Band in a Box or Powertracks Pro for example -- it is a
fine deal).

Either one will operate fine on any Pentium MMX system; only older
Pentium 1 and 486 are hard to support with software synths, but they
are hard to support period being so old.

Another thing is that either one gives you the best support for
playing popular files off the net, because most of them are made for
either Roland or Yamaha synths. Even some made for the SB Live
soundfonts use Roland or Yamaha samples, so the sounds are similar.
But the files which exploit the power of MIDI the best are Roland GS
or Yamaha XG, which extend the range of options in a standardized way.
