hey,
well, after 10 years i finally replaced my starter kit... and i have a
couple of quick questions.
1- i like to cut down on resonance, but with my old kit i had none by
using tape and kleenez, is there a better way?
2- is there any online lessons for tuning drums, i didnt do it very
often with the old kit, so i have to learn.
thanks.

Go to http://www.rmmp.net and read the FAQ. There's information there that
will answer your question(s).

1) moongel, mini-emads, pillows, coated heads, felt strips, messing with
tuning. Did I miss anything?

i like the ring i have on my snare, but its too thick, i lost the
thinner ones, i was thinking of cutting some acetate into strips for
it, do you think that would work?

Don't use it unless it's an emergency. Then take it off asap.
There are many more ways to kill the ring...speaking of which I think we
left out o-rings (dead ringers).

that's funny, I was just looking at this photo:
http://www.fotolog.net/jvoves/?photo_id=318359
the drummer is John McEntire, playing with The Sea and Cake (he's also
in Tortoise). he's got a wallet *taped* to his acrylic Dunnett. *gasp!* :-)
and coincidentally, I saw him play in your town not too long ago (at the
Wexner Center for the Arts). it was a sweet show...

I used to do sound for a jazz group and the drummer actually made the
mistake of trying sanitary napkins one night - he raided his daughter's
stash. He figured they even had tape on them, they were perfect! Of
course, the bass player had to make a run to the drug store on a break and
came back to apply merthiolate to the pads.

no. you can top this only by removing the rezo heads, getting a set of
battered pinstripes as batters and dressing up as peter criss. other than
that, kleenex is the way to go (not forgetting the duct tape).

there used to be a great site www.superdrummer.aol (if memory serves,
propably not). all you need to know about drumming was there.

yeah, thats what i have on my snare, but its like 2 inches wide and
i'd like a half inch instead, and have them on the toms as well, but
they seem pricey for plastic strips. and i cant find ones for the
toms, thats why i wanna try a substitute.

Then if you have any old batter heads, a compass, a pair of fingernail (or
curved) scissors, and a great deal of patience, you can make your own to
suit.

i found this screwed with the tuning... is that possible? maybe its
just cause i had a very low quality set... do you tune with the tape
on or do you put it on after and not bother tuning till you change the
heads?

Tune without it, at first. You always will need to fine tune your
heads from time to time, depending on how much you play and if you
transport them a lot. There will usually be one lug that loosens
up.
I have a tuning section on my website below. That, along with the
FAQ others pointed you to, should give you a ton of info to wade
through. Do a google search for "Bob Gatzen." His video will help
you out a ton, if you're just not getting it from reading.
