My Carvin gig bag is for a 220.00 bass.
My MF gig bag is for a Squier Tele.
My Taylor and my Sheraton both have hard cases.
Ever see a guitar case strapped to someones back?

You have to exercise a little extra care, but overall, a gig bag is no
problem in that area unless you have a really packed vehicle or something.
In all the time I've played I can only remember seeing my Rick Bass case
kicked once. The usual knocks and bumps would have been no less neglible had
I been using a gig bag.
Of course, I wax an 87 dodge aries with a cracked windshield and two
smacked up front fenders.
I like taking care. (and I'm not making any car payments.. know how much
money I save ?)
If you are the hurried type, the neglectful type, the sloppy type... go
case.
Speaking of cases, MF's hard gig bag would be about perfect. cheap,
protected by hard plastic inside the padding.. *s*
In my music room whether the guitar is in the bag, or out, I save space. and
for my small room, that's important.
If I were gigging a bit and traveling I'd want a hard case IF it were for a
guitar that I valued particularly.
The Carvin, even with it's mismatched bass, isn't all that sloppy.
I'd suggest a thirty dollar bag even to someone with a very expensive
guitar, just for their handiness. It's a lot less weight, you can safely
have both hands free if you want, and it's good humidity and temp
protection.. keeps the dust off in the house, too.
A gig bag does what it does and it's not a case, it's a bag.
dust dirt minor dings and kicks temp humidity are no problem.
major accidents where it would be safe in a case present a problem.
depends on the user, the guitar, and the purpose.
