YEEEEPEEEE Lucky me

I'm heading off to Turkey for 2 weeks in september and am planning a visit
to Istanbul for a few days.
I've already recieved a positive email from Istanbul Agop cymbals who said i
can come visit their factory , no word as yet from Bosphorus or Masterworks
..

All going well , i should be coming home with at least 2 Rides, a set of
hats,a Darbuka and a fancy carpet.
While searching through RMMP archives i noticed a few people have been on
this pilgrimage before and i wanted to ask them What sort of prices should i
expect to pay ?
Are the factory prices cheaper than the shops in Istanbul ?
Are there cymbal shops in the Grand Bizaar area ?
How many diarrhoea pills should i bring ? :¬)

Cheers for any help

[checks permanent medicine pocket of computer backpack...]

Let's see: one three-pack of Tums; an eight-pack of earplugs; a 50 ct bottle
of tylenol; spearmint ticktacks; a travel pack of wet-wipes; and
twenty-three generic diarrhoera pills. That's only a two day supply for
India, better get some more.

I'd say at least two dozen. ;)

Glenn D., don't leave home without them.

<Trying to remember my trip to Izmir>

The sewage system can't handle toilet paper. They give you a hose and you
are supposed to use that and your hand. Then a guy will turn on the water
for you and you're supposed to give him a tip.

The guy with the ice cream cart has money hidden under the ice cream. He
will give you a FAR better exchange rate than anywhere else. This money will
likely go to fund terrorist activities, so you're better off passing on the
ice cream deal.

If you buy switchblades from a street vendor and he doesn't have enough cash
to make change, he will give you a chunk of hash. Smoke the hash before you
attempt your return trip.

Young boys will approach you on the street and offer you their sister,
mother grandmother, aunt... if you turn this down, they will then offer
their brother or themselves. Turn that down and they may offer a goat or
camel. You should probably pass on all these offers.

No matter how cute children playing in the street DO NOT touch them on the
head in western style. Do not shake hands nor touch food with your left
hand. I am sure someone will post why. Be careful with the local water, can
be iffy.

Be sure to take along some habanero extract sauce. It will help with the
food, and keep the bugs away. Be secure. Leave the TV on in the room, and
set up security telltales. DON'T let them clean your room. Don't even let
them in. Be sure to get some cheap but effective widow/door locks just in
case, to secure your room.

Dear Lord, after reading the replys below it sounds like you're going
to Iraq. I went to our factory in Istanbul only two weeks prior to
the war and this is what I found: nothing out of the ordinary.
Istanbul is a very European city with the big difference of having a
mosque on every corner. That being said only 5% of population
considers themselves practicing Muslims.

Yes, you need to be careful but for crying out loud have fun...I've
been around the world on several occassions and visited well over 30
countries and I can attest that I enjoyed Istanbul more than just
about anywhere I've been.

As for a factory visit; please send me an email and I'll be sure to
accomodate you while your there. There is no "bazaar" so to speak for
just cymbals, however, there is a shopping district/resturaunt area
called "Taksim" that has a bunch of music stores there. I bought my
son a Fender Teleacoustic there for $70 US. You will find what you
want at our factory or at the Istanbul factory.
