Hi
I received a company bonus and would like to invest in a vintage guitar.
What's a good one for $40K? Any celebrity instruments in that ballpark?
Thanks!

I think it depends on the guitar and the artist. I'd say you are
about 4-1/2 million short of buying Clapton's "Brownie" off the Derek
and the Dominos album cover. The Hendrix "Woodstock" strat can
probably not be estimated even if you were so lucky as to get the
family to part with it.
You can probably find some investments around but if you're not a
player or really know your guitars and market you might as well set a
match to that $40K 'cause it sounds like it's burning a hole in your
pocket.
BTW, guitars are meant for guitarist not bean speculators.

If you want to invest in something invest in secure investments, not musical
instruments.

If you're serious, then grab a copy of vintage guitar magazine. Call
up a few of the guys like Maverick Music, Gruhn, Mandolin bros,
etc....ask them what they've got. There are a ton of things you could
buy with that kind of money. You might be able to scare up some 58-59
bursts....a couple of 50s Strats or Teles....pre war Martins or
Gibsons...celebrity owned Zematias guitars are starting to become
available.
It's no different than buying any other investment in the sense that
you'll have to do some research yourself or buy from someone you
trust. How it differs than another type of investment is that it's a
blast to own. I happen to think the vintage instrument market makes
for great investments. Even player grade guitars have been
skyrocketing. Two thousand for early 3 bolt neck Strats, are you
kidding me? Les Paul Deluxe's for nearly that amount? How's your 401
been looking the last few years? Not that good if it's like mine.
I know you're just looking for info/advice, but asking a question like
you did was like walking into the office back in 99 saying, "which
dotcom should i invest in"......not that it was that bad of an idea
back then....ha ha.

I'd say to anyone who was seriously thinking about guitars as an
investment to be VERY careful. There are fakes all over the place, and
as the prices go up, the fakes become more and more numerous.
At this point, if I were buying a very expensive guitar as an
investment, I'd try to stick with something that had documented
provenance...pretty rare in the guitar market.
