Thanks for the help folks...One of my amps is a rewired Traynor Bassmaster...it
had a master added among some other stuff..problem is, the way I prefer to run
it is with the master wide open, channel vol (gain) on around 9:00...volume and
od controlled by guitar volume...now lately, when it is like this, it has
become very noisey...even without the guitar plugged in, as you raise the
channel volume, it sounds like feedback from a single coil...it gets more
intense as you raise the channel volume... if I tap on the tubes/chasis/case,
it
is all very microphonic..all the same sound and volume...if I reverse the setup
(master down/ channel volume up) most of the assorted noise goes away,
including the microphonics.........would this indicate a bad El34? or maybe
both are bad?..or a cracked socket?....I say this because the more you stress
the power tubes the
worse the noise problem is...any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.I
prefer to order my tubes and dont want to order till I have an idea if this is
the problem or if it is related to an internal problem or something.... Thanks
again....JMsDvd

The noise comes from opening the master all the way and then controlling
volume with the gain. If you want to run it this way you should get rid of
the master volume (or get a non-master volume amp). Otherwise, you're going
to get noise because that's just what happens when you turn the volume all
the way up, you get hiss and noise.
