I need an external hard drive to run my Pro Tools. I guy at a music
store told me to get a Lacie external hard drive, 80 gigs, at 7200
speed. Does this sound abourt right? Actually, macmall.com sells 120
gig for twenty dollors more, so I think I will purhcase that one.
However, I need a quite external hard drive, so the sound of the card
won't be picked up. Does anyone know how to solve this
Thanks

The newer LaCie 720rpm 80 to 120 gig external FD drives are very good. You
could also buy a seperate external firewire disc enclosure for around $110
USD (make sure it has the Oxfoprd 911 or 922 chipset!!!!!) and stick in a
good and seriously quiet Maxtor Diamond 80 or 120 gig ATA133 fluid bearing
harddrive and have a good savings and the ability to upgrade to a bigger
drive in the same enclosure at a later drive.

I had a Lacie here the other day and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, the fan
was so loud. No thanks. This was a year or two old.

The old blue LaCies sucked, but the new silver ones are superb and silent!

The one that was here was the big blue plastic front.

Thanks for the feedback. Are the new Lacie external firewire hard
drives os x compatible? I need to run my pro tools on os 9. I know
there is a new hard drive that won't run os 9, but it only made for os
x, if I understood the salesman correctly.

That sounds odd.

maybe he was talking in salesmaneese (ie doesn't know jack) about
firewire 800 drives which should be backwards compatible with firwire
400 (just run slower?) and the only macs with built in firwire 800 are
the 2003 MDD towers and of course the new ragin G5's and they are OSX
only machines but as far as a hardrive? well HFS+ is HFS+ and both OS9
and OSX recognize that format.
