FWIW - for those wanting to get more clean headroom out of a dirty amp (ala
Fender Deluxe Reverb) no mod will help more that upgrading to a high
efficiency speaker like this. This is Ted Weber's version of the JBL D120F.
I've done about every mod there is to clean up a DR and the speaker change
(to this speaker) was by far the most effective. This is a very good price
also.

If if any corroboration, I've found the 10" Cali to be the same: a
"better D110", esp w/ ceramic & paper, and delivering the same
described results in 10" applications. Nor would I consider a
"warmer" version for these old amps, which have enough of their own
warmth. The Cali is a colorless, clean, toneless spkr that faithfully
delivers whatever one's amp, axe & hands are doing. Sort of "the JBL
that never was." Made my PR play & deliver like a stock VR.

The eminence Delta 12A is also a great speaker for this purpose. It, like
the weber is fairly bright. I think the Eminence has a more flat response
but the weber is more guitaristic and fendery.

I'm interested in the chicago speaker because the California has a bit too
much brightness, particularly with humbucking pickups. It doesn't have a
very smooth overdrive...It's a tough decision though because the california
sounds fabulous with a strat...

Interesting how performance can vary from player to player. In my
case, I never found any older Fender amp that sounded less than
depressing with any humbucker axe, except the SR - possibly related to
its 4x10". But presently with a Cali in my PR, when fed with a bridge
'bucker axe (i.e, a '57-type bucker), when the amp is overdriven the
result is very smooth indeed, and with a great deal of touch control.
Since these are 80w spkrs, we ought to remember that there isn't any
spkr overdrive at all (smooth or otherwise) in the amps being spoken
of, so any complaint (or compliment) we have with its overdriven sound
must be amp- or -guitar-related.

BTW, by "toneless", I meant "no tonality of its own - colorless &
accurate"

I have a 12" Weber Michigan (that replaced a very bright Weber C12Q).
I believe the Michigan is Weber's take on the EVM-12L. I think it is
great. Very smooth high end and very warm (in an Ampeg Reverberocket).
I have not tried any other Webers.

overreacted and became part or whole of the problem. The sad thing is that

I have been preaching the virtues of the Bassman amp and a Les Paul fer long time, my man.

And channel jumped with volumes cranked...WOW! I just love the sound of that rippin Bassman head and a Les Paul...sustains like a
mo-fo too...no wonder its the circuit Marshall used.
