View Full Version : Cool Edit Pro CD Import Track ?

I've been trying to figure out why I can't seem to import CD tracks .cda
into Cool Edit Pro 2? I use winamp as my player and it recognizes and
will play the CDrom/CD, but Cool Edit won't? I think I remember it doing
so at one time, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get it to work.
Cool Edit does play wav files so I'm suspect that there's some option
that I'm overlooking??? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

TIA,
wrkit

There is no such thing as a .CDA-file

CEP is not meant to be a CD player.
If you want to convert CD audio tracks to .WAV there is only ONE tool to do
the job the right way:
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de

DO read the manual and put it in secure mode, otherwise it will read your
CD's just as crappy as the other tools on the market, solely relying on your
CD-ROM player (which wasn't really designed to be a good audio reader
anyway)

But you can. Just do File, Extract Audio From CD.

That's the problem, when I try that, I get no data or cd (.cda)
tracks??? But, my CD player (winamp) works and recognizes the CD???
Hmmm?

Not sure what planet your from, but if you simply do a simple explore,
you'll notice the cd tracks are .cda??? Maybe, before responding you
should do some research...dugh! I'm not sure it should be necessary to
convert the CD tracks to a wav file 1st, before working with them in
CEP? From the menu option, "Extract Audio From CD" you would think that
process is inclusive??? Go figure???

What I get is is a nicely extracted file named Track N. N is the track
number on the CD that I picked in the dialog box that came up after I
clicked on File, Extract Audio From CD.

Not all CD ROM drives do a good job of digital audio extraction with a given
piece of software.

If CEP doesn't do the direct extraction properly, try EAC or CDEX.

From reading the on-line help menu, it explains why I'm having the
problem:

Extract Audio from CD...

Use Cool Edit Pro’s Extract Audio From CD feature to digitally pull out
sound from audio compact discs and place it into the Wave Display for
editing. This extraction process is commonly known as “ripping”. (Keep
in mind that you must have a CD-ROM drive that supports audio extraction
in order to use this feature. Luckily, most newer CD-ROM drives do.)

My CD-ROM is a TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6202B

I guess it isn't as new as I thought??? Anyway, the only way around this
is to record the selected tracks from the CD, save them as .wav files,
then import or open them into CEP.

For Those That Didn't Know-Like Me,

Yeah, that's a circa 1998 drive. FWIW 1998 was still in the bad old days of
digital audio extraction (DAE). In those days, other than Plextor SCSI
drives, you couldn't depend on CDROMs to do bit-accurate DAE.

Really.

Swapping CDROMs is generally pretty simple. The replacement drive will look
identical from the rear. Just make sure it's little jumper cap is located
the same as the original, and plug and play.

I've been having good luck with inexpensive CD and DVD readers made by
Liteon and Asus. $30 or less can put you into far better shape,
hardware-wise.

Hey man, thanks for the heads up. I was trying to avoid spending any
more money on my desktop, so I may just wait until my laptop gets out of
the shop...it's taking this particular outfit over a month now to figure
out why it keeps shuting down or not booting up. And to think this is
an "Authorized" service center. Go figure???

In the end I just may swap out the CD-Rom in the desktop, but that's the
only reason to do so, because it works just fine for other things other
than that one function in CEP. "If it ain't broke...," comes to mind.

That's not really a file in a directory like it looks, it's only a reference to
a track on the CD (hence its size of 44 bytes). It's windoze' way of tricking
itself into knowing what to do with it: one of a bazillion kludges in the OS.
