Is there a way to combine some midi channels, for example when they both use
the same instrument?

Yes, many software sequencers will allow channel merge but midi takes no
prisoners, if the note ranges on the same instrument patch or voicings
overlap and/or exceed polyphony capacity, then you get noise.
Always save the original file.
Most sequencers can rechannel a track in the Edit Menu.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
The rest sit around and make snide comments.
