Can anybody tell me what I must do in order to upgrade my old 4.8
Logic Gold version to the latest 6.x version for OS-x 10.2 (besides
buying it outright, of course...)?

My local reps here in Switzerland want to extort about 2-300 bucks for
the deal, while apparently I could download directly form Logic's
site.

Any ideas?
Thank you,

Paul Weber

"Extort"?? If you want the product, buy it outright, of course.

I think thats the going price on the emagic website as well so they're
not "extorting" you.

Well, that's not the idea, since I did buy it once ( 2 yrs ago?)... I
just need the upgrade. My problem is that I need to move up 2 versions
and the local dealers say I need to perform 2 upgrades (V4 -> 5, V5 ->
6) and pay for both of 'em, which just sounds suspicious, that's all.
I didn't find any specific piece of info to this effect on Emagic's
site, unfortunately.... that's why I'm asking.

I'd call Emagic.

You're in 4, didn't upgrade to 5 and the current version is 6. Depending
on which version of Logic you have (Platinum, Gold, Silver, MicroLogic)
you might find it better to just buy a new version complete instead of
an upgrade. The incremental steps within a release (5.1 from 5.0, for
example) are free. The big steps cost. This isn't surprising.

(I wish I could download a few free upgrades to my car.)

I downloaded a free upgrade to my front fender recently via a pole in a parking
lot.

Are you sure that's actually downloading, and not overloading? It's
definitely not freeloading. Could be offloading for some constrained
values of off.

Hi Paul,

It's not extortion. It is the going price for two paid upgrades. You
can only download the incremental (free) updates from Emagic's web
site. Like going from 5.0 to 5.1. But all of us legit users have had
to pay for an upgrade from 4 to 5 and then from 5 to 6 when it came
out. There's no legit way around it. And if you are a serious Logic
user, I think you will find that it is well worth the money.

Also, FTR; 6.2 is Platinum only currently. The most curent version of
Gold is 6.1.1. The only difference is that 6.2 is necessary for
running in the new G5s.

It very well could have been an upload BUT as now there is a visible dent, I'm
sticking with download.

Maybe it gets fixed in the next one.

that's not exactly right.
you see, when you upgrade to v.5, you get to use v.5 till v.6 comes
out, then you upgrade to v.6.
This guy didn't feel the need to update to v.5 then but wanted to go
v.6 now, he should NOT pay for v.5 which he will NOT use at all. He
may need to pay a little more for skip v.5, but definitely no need to
pay for full upgrade on v.5 before upgrading to v.6
YES. this is extortion, but then again, it's Apple you are talking
about. Apple will charge as much as they can, when they feel there
isn't much competition around and if Apple is to have dominance market
share like the Microsoft, we will all be in hell. yeah, Bill Gates is
no good, Steve Jobs is worse.

It's not extortion, it's a way of spreading out the current cost of
the program over time. I have seen several instances where it's
cheaper to buy the current version of the program outright than to pay
for intermediate upgrades. This is sometimes worth while even if it
costs a little more than the price of the upgrade because you then
have everything in one place (again). This can be a real convenience
if you have to re-install the software.

But you pay what you have to if you want to continue to use the
software. This is how software companies make their money. If you
bought a reverb unit and the manufacturer brought out an upgraded
version, there's only one way you'd get that upgrade, isn't there? Why
should software be any different? Just because there are no parts
doesn't mean that nobody has to get paid for their efforts in bringing
it to you.

I'm hoping I run into a huge octopus at the same spot on my fender and when I
back away the dent will pop back out.

COULD Happen?

Or how about that dome tweeter trick with the vacuum cleaner? Or was it
a bong?

I never surrendered my bong for any trick, no matter how good she
looked.
